I used this method a number of times (I develop software and have to rebuild my computer repeatedly with different configurations) and have never had a problem, neither with the USB for set up, nor with the WiFi for printing.

Agree with the P.S.
While it can take some time to connect a Canon printer, there is logic in their system and it is documented.
Although USB works fine for printers in the same room, I prefer a network connection when available (and cable over wifi). Easier to print from other devices.
For a photo printer it is less needed (but less practical to have in another room also).
