This is only true for printers of the PGI-5/CLI-8 and BCI-3e/6 and may be older cartridge generations of Canon printers. For these printers the procedure for entering service mode and the push button codes for service mode operations was found in the service manuals, which were not always error free.

When the PGI-x20/CLI-x21 cartridge generation was introduced, push button codes could no longer be used for service mode operations, instead a special software service tool was needed.

I'm always behind the times..............

But IIRC, most of the models mentioned being of interest are old school.

Here it is!

-snip-

Update1: Here is a Russian site with links to links to the versions 1.050. 2.000 and 3.400. The version 0.700 is of no use. The downloads don't work with a Google translate, but the downloads work from the original untranslated Russian site. They are easily found on the Russian page, when you compare to the translated page.

The downloaded service tools tested OK with both AVG Internet security and Malwarebytes Antimalware.

The download for the ST v1.050 contains 3 files. "crkSTool_V1050, ServiceTool_V1050 and SIP Tools Lite." The crkSTool_V1050 is the proper service tool. There are no problems with the downloads for versions 2.000 and 3.400.

Older updates were removed as the links no longer work.
As of 15-February-2015, the Russian site linked above is partially broken. The links there are:
ST V700.zip - 19 244 кБ
ST V1050.zip - 381 кБ
ST V2000 - 188 kB
ST V3400 - 200 kB
ST V3600 - 966 kB ST_V3600_resetters.zip (199К)
Количество загрузок:: 3204
When I tried these links (untranslated) with Firefox 31.4.0 ESR, I got the following results:
ST V700 - I didn't try it.
ST V1050 - downloads OK, passes simple virus scan. Untested.
ST V2000 - links to a complex page on the same site with no indication of an actual download.
ST V3400 - links to a complex page on the same site with no indication of an actual download.
ST V3600 - downloads OK, passes simple virus scan. Untested.

As far as I have been able to determine, there are no working links to V. 2.000 or V. 3.400 at present.

I have not tested either successful download because I am still looking for a service manual for my MX892 (=US version of MX890), and thus am uncertain if there are any restrictions on use of specific versions of the Service Tool. And without a Service Manual, I would be guessing about how to enter service mode. There are too many versions of the procedure floating around, all probably correct for specific models, but none, as yet, stated to work on mine.

Anyone have relevant information ? Preferably quoted from the MX890 SM.

Looks like 2.000, all right. The 3.6 appears to be identical to the one I successfully downloaded from the Russian site, as mentioned in post #142.

Thanks for the links!

Thanks for the info. It looks like an update of post #1 is needed. Does anybody have links for other versions?

Why can't the verified tools be attached to a thread for direct download?

The simple answer is, they are exe files which can’t be downloaded on Nifty without having to alter their extension..

You could Zip them up, then again perhaps those file are not allowed too, but a moderator should have higher privileges ;/
