I found this Russian site which has links to the versions 1.050. 2.000 and 3.400. The version 0.700 is of no use.
The version 0.700 is of no use (and here is something to ad) for newer printers :p
A month ago I was intensively searching for service mode program for iP1900. And nearly give it up. Finally, that service tool v0.700 worked, and even allow for cartridge ink level reset
Looks like some simple printers don't have internal service mode, so service mode program is provided externally by some software files (v0.700 have plenty o these for iP1900, iP1800 and some other printers).
But more complex printers have service mode internally. Presence of USB port or card reader is good factor for complexity.
Looks like newer printers have internal service program, but function caller is external software (V1.050 and higher) - it is probably why iP3600 can't support EEPROM export function working in iP4800 generation printer. Cannot execute function that isn't implemented in printer's firmware.

During the last half year searching for service tools and service manuals has become risky. Make sure you are using good and updated security software and always scan downloads.
In my fruitless search for Service Tools before finding this forum I discovered some awful junk attached to every download, mainly those browser hijackers that are a bugger to get rid of (ask me how I know this :))
It was started when some Ukrainian site uploaded V3.400 (or maybe V2.000?) with some spam inside (it was two giant TIFF pictures inside, but I found pictures content disappointing :hide).

Have you also tried downloading from the translated site? I think we are both using Win 8.1 64 bits and Firefox as the default browser? Maybe I need to change a setting?
We are using the same OS and browser.

I just clicked on the link you provided and did not try to translate first into English. I was able to download from the native Russian language page. Don't know why you have issues with compressed file. What file compression application do you use? Are you trying to read the text file within without downloading, uncompressing and then viewing? Maybe trying a different browser or downloading directly from the Russian page may work.

Neither Notepad nor Wordpad can read the Readme, due to the Russian text. But Microsoft Word can do it. I copied the Russian text and inserted in Google translate and got this:
You are a crafty Dane! Nice workaround. :thumbsup

I have been using a free MS Office knockoff called Kingsoft Writer that I put on my Kindle. Your workaround you did does not work for me. Am going to try Office Libre, another free application, in the next couple of says. If the cost of MS Office ever drops enough then I will buy it. For now, the knockoffs works well for me.

I might not have been quite clear in post #123. I had no problems downloading from the untranslated original Russian site. But for some reason the download links didn't work from the translated site, but caused an error message from Google translate. I have now edited the first paragraph in post #123, I hope it is more clear now. Here is the edited paragraph:

Recently I got a couple of requests for links to the service tools. Sadly links don't last forever, so I did a new search. I found this Russian site which has links to the versions 1.050. 2.000 and 3.400. The version 0.700 is of no use. The downloads don't work with a Google translate, but the downloads work from the original untranslated Russian site. They are easily found on the Russian page, when you compare to the translated page.

I use WinRAR as my standard packing/unpacking program. It also handles ZIP archives without problems. I have had no problems with unpacking the downloads.

I wonder if the problems with download from the Google translated site is a quirk with Google translate, I think so, but could others test this? But I don't know if I can change some setting in Google translate to solve the problem? I have downloaded from other Google translated sites without problems.

Me either. The file downloaded fine.

This is where things get interesting. Your post #128 has a quote featuring your translation in Danish along with the link. I was able to click on this link in the quote and download the file. At this point I figured you were out drinking with @The Hat or "something is rotten in the state of Denmark" (Marcellus, Act I, Hamlet).

I use WinRAR as my standard packing/unpacking program.
I use WinRAR as well.

I wonder if the problems with download from the Google translated site is a quirk with Google translate, I think so, but could others test this?
Now that I understood your premise -- the link in the Google translated text does not work -- I then translated the text into English, clicked on the link, and, viola!, error same as you. However, if I copied and pasted the URL found in the error message into the browser I was then successful in connecting and downloading the desired file.

The exact same behavior was duplicated with Internet Explorer v.11.x

But I don't know if I can change some setting in Google translate to solve the problem? I have downloaded from other Google translated sites without problems.
Don't know of any setting to change. I also have had success with other translated pages and their links. Chalk this one up to a "Crazy Ivan" (The Hunt For Red October movie quote.)

Seaman Jones: Conn, sonar! Crazy Ivan!
Capt. Bart Mancuso: All stop! Quick quiet!
[the ships engines are shut down completely]
Beaumont: What's goin' on?
Seaman Jones: Russian captains sometime turn suddenly to see if anyone's behind them. We call it "Crazy Ivan." The only thing you can do is go dead, shut everything down and make like a hole in the water.
Beaumont: So what's the catch?
Seaman Jones: The catch is, a boat this big doesn't exactly stop on a dime... and if we're too close, we'll drift right into the back of him.
If you haven't seen the movie then I highly recommend it. Sean Connery. Submarines. What's not to like.

Probably Ivan did not adhere strictly to web page programming rules? Sometimes a web page doesn't work with one browser but works with another.

I have seen "The hunt for Red October", and I liked it. I also think the old James Bond movies with Sean Connery were the best.

Thank you for the info, I didn't know that.

It seems there also exists some iP tools and MP tools for the older Canon two cartridge iP and MP models. Some of these tools can even reset the ink levels. These tools are not available for the newer two cartridge models, instead the service tools can be used, but not for a cartridge ink level reset, only an ink absorber reset. Here and here are some links that might be of interest if you want to reset older two cartridge printers.

On page 2 in post #36 from the same Russian forum as linked to before I found a download for a version 3.600 of the service tool. This download also works from the link in post #36 in this Google translation.

The download site has more than one button marked "Download", the proper one is in the upper left corner. click to enlarge:

ST3600-1.jpg

I checked the download with both AVG Internet Security and MBAM and nothing wrong was found. But when I would test the service tool Windows 8.1 warned me not to run this file, so following the advice by @stratman here, I got a clean bill of health from virustotal, with nothing found by 54 different scanners. After renaming the downloaded file to ST3600, I could run it without warnings from Windows 8.1.

I am convinced that the file is clean, but download and use at your own risk!

The layout is the same as for versions 3.200 and 3.400, so even if not everything is translated from Chinese (?) you can find out the drop down menus from comparing to one of the other versions. I have tested the version 3.600 on an iP3600, here is a screen shot, click to enlarge:

Just a big thank you to PeterBJ for providing me a link to the Service Tool so that I could reset the ink absorber counter on my MG6120 after cleaning the absorbers. It is really significant because I have two of these printers and expect that the other will need it also in not to long.

I also thank him for his expertise/advice. I had been looking for v1.050 and he advised using the 3.400. The reset was fast and easy.

No tool required. All the codes are to be found in the "Simplified Service Manual" for your printer. I've found them for all my Canon printers. Do a search and include "pdf" in it. It will take awhile to sort through the BS and accumulator links, but I've always found what I need.

This is only true for printers of the PGI-5/CLI-8 and BCI-3e/6 and may be older cartridge generations of Canon printers. For these printers the procedure for entering service mode and the push button codes for service mode operations was found in the service manuals, which were not always error free.

When the PGI-x20/CLI-x21 cartridge generation was introduced, push button codes could no longer be used for service mode operations, instead a special software service tool was needed.
