How can I be sure it's the print head?
They're not cheap.

Mixed your issues up with someone elses. Sorry for the confusion.

Your problem is not due to the cartridge. A new printhead may solve your problem and would be what I would try if I wanted to keep the printer. No one can be 100% sure a new printhead will solve your issues.

Most of the guys on here are sure your problem electrical, maybe it is and a new print head is recommended.
But I would like to know what cartridges you are using and do you refill them, it also could be ink starvation from your cartridge.
The ip4700 is as good as it gets with Canon printers its much better than ip5000, but in saying that if you can save your old timer from the scrap heap then it might well be worth the investment.
