My new (new to me at least) Canon IPF8300 is in the house! :) I got this for a ridiculously low price on eBay and the seller lived about 2 miles from me. I'll tell you want... this is one heavy printer. The original owner took very good care of it, as I can't see any ink residue any where. I cleaned up some minor dust and now it looks almost brand new.

I fired it up and I'm getting a "Close Carriage Cover" warning. I looked all around the cover and didn't see anything that looked like a sensor... does anyone know how to cure this issue?

I went through the service manual and found out where the sensor is for the "Close Carriage Cover" error that was being thrown. Actually pretty easy to get to, so I cleaned it up (wasn't really dirty at all) and that did nothing for the error. I found this link, http://www.copytechnet.com/forums/canon/72479-canon-ipf8300.html , that talked about the same issue. Its amazing how many errors on the IPF line of printers that are traced to either the printhead, carriage board or the main control board. In my case, its a classic example of the main controller board going out.

I watched a youtube video of a main controller board being swapped out and this looks like a piece of cake, there is a process as the main board has a lot of saved data on it. The trick here is going to be finding a replacement board that will not break the bank. I found another IPF8300 just a few miles from me, and they state that it just needs 2 ink carts changed and it needs a new printhead. I'm thinking about getting it for parts... Does anyone know of the pitfalls in swapping parts around in these printers?

Yes, just be careful that the print head in this printer has not blown some components on the logic board, otherwise when you install that board in your printer, it too can cause damage to your print head, its a small risk but it’s still a risk to be aware of... ;)

Thanks! This has been noted.

I just acquired the main controller board... hope to have this up and running this weekend. :)
