So the CAnon i9900 driver comes with the following profiles: SP1, MP1, PR1, PR2. I did a search and thought I found that Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy (and II) is SP1 and was using that profile. The colors were a bit off and so as an experiment I used PR1 with significantly better color results. SInce I can't find it on Canon's website, can anyone definitely say which papers correspond to SP1, MP1, and PR1?

An edit: I just re-checked and found website which definitely say that the profiles are: Canon PR1 and PR2 are for Canon Photo Paper Pro, Canon SP1 is for Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy, and Canon MP1 is for Canon Matte Photo Paper.

And yet using Photo Paper Plus Glossy II I seem to get much better color results using PR1. Of course, when I print using Aperture I select the PR1 profile, and in the 2nd print dialog, I select Photo Paper Plus Glossy.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Dave

Are you using OEM cartridges or compatible cartridges or refilled cartridges with Hobbicolors or refilled cartridges with Precision Colors or something else?

I just got the printer and most of the cartridges were low so I replaced the low ones with ink from Cartridge World. I've ordered Hobbicolors stuff. I don't mind experimenting with profiles, especially since the CAnon papers have changed over the years (Photo Paper Plus Glossy II, for example). I just wish that somewhere I could have found a definite Canon statement as to which papers the profiles are for.

I suppose this brings about the broader issue, when I use the Hobbicolors ink or any other ink vendor, do the profiles become irrelevant?

And even more confusing is the fact that in Aperture, I can select whatever profile I wish to use but on the 2nd printing screen I get to choose the paper. So right now, using Photo Paper Plus Glossy II, I have selected the PR1 profile, but on the 2nd screen have selected Photo Paper Plus Glossy. To my eye, the color is more accurate than when I chose SP1.

You will need to make your own profiles if you use Hobbicolors and don't like the way it prints because they no longer supply a set of inks that match the BCI-6 cartridges.

Thanks for the heads up on the change in the Canon paper. I wonder if they claim it still works with the original profile.

I don't know if they claim the profile is still correct but they do say to select in the driver Photo Paper Plus Glossy (if you have Glossy II paper). Photo Paper Pro has been replaced with Photo Paper Pro II which on the Canon website is not even listed as compatible with the i9900.

So based on all this, are any of the profiles relevant? I'm far from an expert on all this and only wanted the printer to print a close approximation to what I see on the screen.

So that's two papers that have changed. Are there anymore?

I cannot answer you question about whether the profiles for the changed paper types are relevant, maybe someone else knows.
