Sounds like it's basically a driver/connectivity issue that ties the device to specific software. You'd probably see a similar issue if you had two photo editors and tried to force a scan via TWAIN through both on the same scanner.
Whichever got there first would "win" the device or kill the service in a sort of "If I can't have her, no-one will" pact.
In case anyone is wondering the "service" can be found via:
(Windows 7) CTRL + ALT + DEL > Services Tab > Right click the one you need to kill and choose "Stop Service"
Windows XP via START > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, etc...
Perhaps you should be laying off the happy weed when profiling though eh Joe?
