I dough know but lately I seem to be having all kinds of problems. The latest is when I print out a nozzle check Im getting a bad looking PK check.

I had this a couple of weeks ago and then it disappeared. It came back yesterday morning and then disappeared again. Everything looked good last night. Today I was going to print some photos so I decided to run another nozzle check and bang there it is again. I tried another refilled cart that Im pretty sure is good but I get the same print out for the nozzle check.
Now I tried to scan a copy of the print out at 300 and 150 dpi but they both look terrible to me. The scan makes it look like all colors are bad with the pk being the worst. The scan also shows the pgbk is really bad but when I look at the actual print it looks very good. Whats goin on here.??
First one is 300dpi and second one is 150 dpi

I thought maybe the carts were not delivering enough ink so I plugged the german fill hole and blew into the vent to force ink out of the port on both carts til I got several drops of the black ink out. Cleaned up the port and put the cart back in and ran another nozzle check printout with the same results.

Your PGBK matri shows non-functioning nozzles. Either they have failed (burned out) or they are clogged. An aggressive head soak might be in order. PGBK is only used for black text printing (and some graphics).

You say the PK looks bad. Do you mean the BK (dye black), which indicates a distinct ink flow issue. Try a new OEM cart there.

Your Photo Black cartridge needs to be purged and refilled again, and your pigment black large cartridges I reckon is also having some similar ink flow issues but nowhere as bad as the PK.

Follow @turbguy lead and replace the photo black cartridge with a new one (not refilled) and run a normal head clean on just the black side of the head and then print another nozzle check.

There should be a considerable difference in this nozzle check and the one posted, you can get a 3rd party compatible cartridge if you don’t want to buy a new OEM, it will do the same job for you.

Now you have said that your having all kinds of problems lately yourself, so if I were you I would do a complete rethink on how you refill and maintain your current stock of cartridges because it’s clearly not working too well as clearly demonstrated by your current issues.

Sometimes we think we are doing our refilling properly but after a while all these little thing we’re not do properly tend to build up and wham you get a big problem out of the blue, but ask yourself have I been following the correct procedures all a long or just cutting a few corners.

The one thing I can say is your doing the right thing now by seeking help before your print head gets damaged, so please don’t think about printing anything other than nozzle checks till you get all of these issues resolved.

Ok I thought by trying another bk cart that I had been refilling was a good test but I agree there is know way of knowing what condition it is in. So I have a new set of purged carts I am going to refill and give them a try. Today I mixed up some pharmacist conditioning solution and re-purged the set of carts and they are now drying with the paper towel method. I will probably refill them tonite or in the morning. My pgbk cart has improved to the point where only the bottom line shows a few horizontal lines missing. Hopefully this will get better with the new carts installed.

HAT--- How do I “run a normal head clean on just the black side of the head” and then print another nozzle check.?

What I don't understand is my blowing thru the vent and forcing ink out the port has not helped the situation at all not even for a little bit??
HAT---You are correct I have been taking some shortcuts especially in not purging older carts that have been used for awhile. I also have a new set OEM carts coming next week I will be able to try if the purged ones don’t work.

I was getting a couple of error msgs on the printer last week on and off and since this printer is still under warranty I called tech support for some help. The tech was pretty good and helped me out. I was getting an error msg. #5100 and #5700. When I looked them up in the manual it said there was something keeping the printer head assy from moving back and forth and to clear it and turn the printer off and back on. Well I couldn’t find anything that could cause this and the error kept coming back every so often. The tech had me look at the clear plastic tape that runs left to right behind the print head. I found a little spec of grease on it about 1/8” x 1/8”. He instructed me to get a little windex on a tissue and gently wipe it off until it was gone and dry. At the same time I was having the print nozzle problem so I asked him for help on that . He had me do a print nozzle check and it came out the pgbk was not very good looking. After a discussion he asked if I had another pgbk cart I could try. The bk cart looked fine. I did have a refill and when I put it in and printed the nozzle check everything came out perfect. The bad pgbk cart was a new oem refill I had just purchased. So for all my trouble and wasted ink he offered to send me a full set of carts which I should get this week. But the next morning the print nozzle check came out poorly including the bk so this is why I contacted you folks.

I only mention all this so if someone else out there has a problem with the #5100 or #5700 error it might help them and also if your printer is under warranty don’t be afraid to give them a call and ask for help.

:thumbsupWell I guess I got a pretty good nozzle check print. All colors look good PGBK still has a few horizontal lines missing. To print good photos is it important that I get all these missing lines to print in the nozzle check?

Two things happened after I had purged these carts with pharmacist solution…
First off I dried them with paper towel for about 2 hours.
There weight was about 11g, some more some less. Cant remember what the PGBK was I think about 15g.
  1. I tried to fill these through the top where the ball was removed. I had the orange port covers rubber banded on tightly. The first was the BK . Almost had a catastrophy here. I got it filled to about 16g and the ink came streaming out of the German hole on the end. Surprise Surprise. Cleaned up the mess and decided to wait a while to see if the sponge needed to soak up the ink. I even inverted the cart in an attempt to get the ink in the sponge around the vent area. When I resumed filling it started to stream out again, this time I was ready for it. Cleaned up the cart and put the ball back in the whole set of carts and then sealed them with alum. tape. Set the BK cart to the side to settle down. I decided then and there I was going to stick with filling through the German hole.
  2. Then I proceeded to fill the colors and the PGBK cart. Slowly fill them to where I could see some ink showing in the prism. Then I turned the carts right side up and let them set with the needle and the squeeze bottle still in them. After I got them all partially filled this way. I removed the needle and set them upright over night. This morning I again turned them over and began to try and finish filling them. I weigh them as I fill them so I know when I am close to full. At around 16 – 17 g each one began to puddle up on the exit port. So I stopped and let them all sit again one by one the same thing happened. I usually fill the colors to about 19-20 grams and the PGBK to about 29 – 30grams. I know if I want, I can get about 21g+ and 31g+ in these carts but not this time. None of them would get past 17.5g and then puddle up again at the port. I let them set an hour or so and then sealed the German hole with Alum. tape. I installed them ran one clean nozzles and then printed the nozzle check which I have uploaded. It seems the capacity of these carts has been redueced.?? So my question is with some use will I be able to these up to the 19-20 grams? Whats going on here??? My printed copy of the nozzle check looks a lot better then it does when I posted it here??

If you want to topfill a cartridge, that has previously been refilled using the German method, it is very important to seal the German refill hole, or the cartridge will leak during refill, as you found out

I guess so. After thinking about this I see with two openings one at the top and the side hole lets it flow just like the bottom port has to be covered or the ink will come out there also.:idunno
