The best solution is another OEM CLI-42 Yellow cartridge that has been flushed with Windex with Ammonium D as per instructions discussed previously.

If you want to swap the chip, then a flushed used Canon OEM CLI-8 Yellow cartridge is the best "compatible", because it is Canon OEM construction, appears to be overtly identical to the CLI-42, and has the yellow plastic identification on the cartridge top. Used OEM Yellow CLI-8 cartridges may be easier to source than a used Yellow CLI-42 cartridge. Otherwise, any properly flushed CLI-42 or CLI-8 cartridge, regardless of color, can be used after the OEM CLI-42 Yellow chip is swapped.

Just an update, I have been printing a little over the past week, and as The Hat predicted, the print head is settling down and the nozzle check has improved. All the bands are intact except for a faint, thin photo magenta line (although the original magenta defect resolved long ago). I have hopes that with continued printing, the photo magenta will resolve eventually.

One might think I'm almost back to where I started (with the single thin defect in the magenta), but on the contrary, I have learned a lot about cleaning and flushing, and I consider this an investment in long term success. I also have less fear in trying the Precision Color Inks in the future, which I had only avoided because of inexperience with flushing the cartridges.

As per my opinion, you should contact any technical person before doing this. It may cause damage to the machine without proper knowledge.
