The best solution is another OEM CLI-42 Yellow cartridge that has been flushed with Windex with Ammonium D as per instructions discussed previously.if I want a spare yellow cartridge ready to go
If you want to swap the chip, then a flushed used Canon OEM CLI-8 Yellow cartridge is the best "compatible", because it is Canon OEM construction, appears to be overtly identical to the CLI-42, and has the yellow plastic identification on the cartridge top. Used OEM Yellow CLI-8 cartridges may be easier to source than a used Yellow CLI-42 cartridge. Otherwise, any properly flushed CLI-42 or CLI-8 cartridge, regardless of color, can be used after the OEM CLI-42 Yellow chip is swapped.
