No worries.
It should be similar to the older PG-40 cartridge. I still have to decide about the best refill method.
1. The 'usual' method seems to be to drill a small hole on top and use that for 'blind' refill (either some predetermined amount or until it actually starts to come out of the hole!).
2. Take the whole top part of the cartridge off to reveal the sponge. Then you can fill the ink until the top of the sponge starts to show some colour. After, simply tape the top back on - won't be as airtight as before so a bit scary.
3. My idea - take to top off, drill a large (1cm) hole in the top and glue the top back on. That way I can (hopefully) see how much ink I need to add while at the same time making it easy to seal the hole with some transparent tape.

Another way to fill your cartridge would be to use a bottle instead of a syringe.
Drill a 3mm hole in the top of your cartridge not a 10mm, it will be easier to seal up again.
Fill the cartridge till ink begins to come out the hole, and then use the half squeezed bottle to suck up the excess ink.

Was wondering, Is the Black KMP ink as good as the Image Specialist brand? Better?

I use Image Specialist pigment inks in my PGI-9 cartridges because it does the best job for me in terms of colour and quality,
but cant get them to work successfully in the 3eBK, PGI-521BK or PGI-5BK's.
I use Universal and PGI-220 KMP inks in the other cartridges mentioned, because the print quality is second to none in the A4 printers
and I use dye inks in PGI-5BKs on my other printers on CISS.. :)

Thank you Hat. I have some Image Specialist ink for my CLI-200/221 cartridges and I guess I'll go with that - hope it works out ok with my pixma mx860. I'm always looking for tips on the best ink to use for this printer because cheep ink is never worth it (even in the short run). Suggestions on the best quality ink to use are always appreciated!!! Thanks again!

Here is another (untested) method of determining how much ink to refill: I have measured the weight of the full PG-510 cartridge (as it arrived with the printer) at 34g. I guess it can be safely filled with a few more ml (possibly up to 38g?) . Now I can simply weight the cartridge and add 1ml for each gram below 38. Should be less 'messy' than filling the ink until it overflows.
Both my KMP ink and the tool for pulling the ink (and air bubbles) from the head have arrived so all is set for my first refill.
