Am I too late to find a resettable/refillable Canon printer? MFP?

Hi,

I've been a member of this site (nifty-stuff.com as was) for a few years and come close to buying a new printer on a couple of occasions - a home multi-function - but convinced myself someone would always find a way to crack the cartridge chips, so no rush.

Am I too late?

I would prefer a CLI-8 cart printer, for which we all are much too late - but IMHO these are the latest which are refillable and resettable really easy, clear body, 13ml.
Have a mp810 and a ip4500 both from ebay. The problem are the canon printheads, which are very often burnt out..

Never too late... The trick is to find a printer that is not too new that you are out there on the pointy end banging your head against a brick wall... and not so old that the printer lacks the functionality or support you need.

The problem with Canons is that you need to be sure you have spare printheads to hand for when Canon end-of-life them so while those printers of @martin0reg are good ones, finding the printheads is going to be difficult. I think 4500's have been EOL'd earlier this year but they were really, really nice printers!

I switched from Canon to Brother multifunctionals some time ago and I'm pretty satisfied with them. Easy to refill, they start up pretty fast, no clogging and no endless cleaning cycles. Good for everyday printing, photo quality is less than Canon (only YMC and Black ink) but I find it acceptable. Also, a plus is the automatic document feed that some models - even the smaller ones - have.

The last resettables/refillables are the 525/526.
Same cartridges and inkset as the previous 520/521, but different chip and resetter (by swapping chips you can use the cartridges in both).
They look less sturdy built than older series, and they are reliable.

Printheads still are available, but you can find used machines with only 1000-1500 pages much cheaper than a new head.

I only really need a scanner and to print a few photos every month (1pl quality preferably), but an LCD, wi-fi and duplex would be good. I seem to be limited to just 4, all at the same price of £100 - Pixma MG7750 (570/571 cartridges), MG7550 (550/551), MX925 and MX725.

I've been counting down in 100s, from the current model nos., to try and locate some models with 525/526 or 520/521, but no luck so far. That MP810 sounds like it's from 2007-ish!

Another question, sorry: are the savings huge from refilling?
