Each one of these 2 fluid oz bottles of dye base ink are fluid oz short.

My last order of ink was the same way so is this a common practice for ink vendors to short each bottle of ink?
I know I am picky so I ask the members of this forum am I being treated fairly?

How are you measuring the two oz.? Pour one of the containers of ink in 1/4 cup to see if you are short of ink. i think you will find you were given too much.

Ron,

I think you are assuming that the bottle will hold exactly 2oz which may not be correct. You can either measure the ink from one of the bottles or if you have a similar old ink bottle, you can pour 2oz water to see how much it holds.

2oz=3.6 cubic inch
You can calculate the volume of ink in the bottle using this formula: V=3.14 * r * r * h where r is the radius of the bottom of the bottle and h is the height of the ink.

sathyakala you are correct and I was wrong.

Set up my 100 mL Burette and double checked.
Each plastic bottle holds approximately 66 mL which is 2.23 oz.

Ok 2 OZ = 59.147mL and my bottles only have approximately 52 mL each.
So it looks like the bottles are only 7mL short.

Being picky again this is what 7mL looks like in the bottom of the bottle.

Bulk ink is sold commercially by the pound as in weight as I quickly discovered when I got into this.
Why? I thought about it and then concluded that weighing the ink is the most consistent and easily repeatable method and most economical method. A simple scale will do it very accurately and it removes any variations in internal bottle volume etc.

You can dispense very accurately to the drop literally by using digital scales. You cannot accomplish the same without expensive equipment or a slow process if done by volume.
A $20 digital scale will get you down to the drop as owners who are refilling Pro9500 are likely discovering. Dispensing by volume is expensive slow and inaccurate unless you have expensive automated equipment and still the vagaries of temperature variances will cause volume shifts, not so by weight, unless we determine that gravity shifts depending on where we are on earth and yes it does.

Yellow ink is the densest and always looks less. Filling by volume using a marker on the bottle is very inaccurate as each bottle is slightly different. The weight of each bottle changes actually and that is all accounted for in each bottle as each is pre-weighed before filling.

Pigment ink is less dense and always looks fuller for the same weight.

If an item is sold as volume, the buyer expects the stated volume or a little more, NOT LESS. On your $18 ink purchase, you were short 7ml out of 59.147ml or 11.8% or $2.13.
If the purchase I just made of 8 ink 4 oz. bottles for $43.88 was shorted the same percent, that would equal $5.18. We are not talking about a lot of money, but

Check whether they promised the size in ounces or fluid ounces. One would assume fluid ounces, but Mikling has a point about dispensing by weight. They're not actually the same size, even for water.

EDIT: See my later post. In this case, it was sold by weight.

If you were purchasing OEM inks then you might have something to complained about,
but come on guys this stuff is dirt cheap so a couple of mls here or there is nothing to get your knickers in a twist about. :rant

Just be happy in the notion that without these 3rd party quality inks
then we would really have something to moan about.

Happy Printing.. :)

this thread started because of appearance, if the bottles were smaller and filled to the brim would people think boy i'm getting a little extra, my pet peave is paying shipping charges but that is all part of the expence that people doing business have to deal with, i really can not even estimate how much money i have saved over the years refilling, in reality i spend more money on copy paper than ink, the last time i looked at the store a set of 220/221 cartridges were $56.00, don't worry be happy LOL
