Just noticed that I have two copies of AdobeRGB1998.icc with slightly differing file names.

In profile information, in Gamutvision, they show up as a MAC version and the other as a Windows version.

Examining the visual displays of a profile with each of the versions of Adobe1998 in Gamutvision shows slightly differing results. Until now I had assumed the files were identical, but it just shows how careful you have to be!!

What are the file names? That may point to what they are used for.

Excuse the off topic post Apetitphoto.

Hope you are well clear of the killer hurricane currently slammining into the Texas Gulf Coast.

I am a few thousand Km away and our media reports are full of the evacuations and preparations for relief after "Harvey" passess over. Keep safe!

Thanks Roy I should be unscathed by this one. Unlike Celia when I was a kid living in her path for both sides of her fury.
I hope that others have taken heed of the warnings and left.

Looking at the sat image, I see the centre hole is just over where my daughter used to live in Houston ten years ago. I bet she is glad she moved back to Europe!

Incidentally the only difference in the file names is AdobeRGB1998.icc and AdobeRGB98.icc.

Not sure if this has any relevene to your issue at hand. The paragraph below gives chapter and verse from Adobe on Adobe1998.icc profile which is an Adobe proprietary profile, although apparently in the public domain.

"Legal note regarding color-space naming: Only the Adobe RGB (1998) ICC profile created by Adobe Systems Incorporated can accurately be referred to as "Adobe RGB (1998)." ICC profiles created by other vendors, even if they conform to the color image encoding described in the Adobe RGB (1998) color image encoding document, cannot be referred to as "Adobe RGB (1998)." If vendors choose to create their own profile according to this specification, and they want to indicate to their customers that this profile was written in accordance with Adobe's specification, then an alternate phrasing is required, such as "compatible with Adobe RGB (1998)."

From this I would conclide that your file, "AdobeRGB98", is somebody elses variant.

If someone has produced a MAC variant (see original post) it has to have a different name to avoid conflict. It seems there are several different versions floating about on the net. You can only see the details in Gamutvision, under 'profile information'.

I am open to correction on this, but my understanding is that ICC profile files are platform and OS agnostic.

They are essentially data and matrix files in a specified format that is read and interpreted by the components of the colour managment system.

For the longest time Adobe products were only available on the MAC platform. The PC platform is a comparative newcomer to the color reproduction world, and in the opinion of many still playing "catchup".

When you see a bevy of top pro's at an international event you are almost blinded by the White Canon long lenses and the Apple logo's on their laptops.
