Thanks turbguy,
I've just finished washing the waste pads and they are out in the Arizona sun drying out. If they dry out as fast as my skin did, it won't be long. ;-)
I'm pretty sure the tube is clear and securely fastened. I've got stuff cleaned up a bit and now I just hope I've haven't damaged something out of sheer ignorance. Wouldn't be the first time.

Make sure you can pass fluid through from the parking pad to the pump discharge (you might try to turn the pump gears with your fingers carefully with a pool in the pads and watch the fluid drain away).

The parking pads are thin plates of porous ceramic that lift out around the rubber gasket that surrounds them. they must be carefully reseated into the gasket if removed, with all the little rubber tabs nudged back atop them, otherwise the gasket will not seal properly to the print head during it's sucking action. Its worth cleaning them out, too, as they can become plugged. Don't drop the ceramic plates into the printer, as they can be a real pain to retrieve...

I'm trying to get it all back together but I'm having trouble with the cover not wanting to snap down in front. Something appears to be holding it up, maybe up in the middle, I can't figure out what it is. It may be hitting something that causes it to either fit in the front or in the back, but not both at once. Any wise words to share?

Did you get those two metal tabs to slide into the slots? If not, it won't go together.

I'm not sure I know about the tabs. Where are they?

They are at the bottom front frame of the guts, they slide into slots in the plastic base. You can't just drop the guts into the case, you have to start the tabs in the slots and slide the guts forward slightly before screwing it back down.

Yay, I have black! :weee Thanks to you wonderful people for helping a total know-nothing. I have another i860 that also won't print black and now I'm tempted to get it out of storage and have a look at it.

You're welcome. Yes, drag that other printer out and do the same thing. Don't forget to reset the Waste Ink Counter using instructions in the service manual! I let you look for them...
