Shoot, I'm sorry to hear that. :( The black issue was the same issue I had, I thought a good cleaning might fix it. The one that gave you the error then was the new one. Why would that happen?

One is nearly brand new but they will both need a good cleaning. The older one probably had regular black ink fed through its PGBK line. They can be yours for shipping and handling from Japan.

Totally understand. It's possible that the root problem also damaged the print heads when I tried to use them; there's no way for me to find out!

Tom, there is one tiny spot pretty far over on the right, but I can't seem to get it off. There are also about three whitish spots along the belt; they are not ink and I can't imagine what they are. They look like scratches but they are shaped like blobs rather than scratches.

Just got my new printhead today. Got this result. Ran a cleaning. Most of the PGBK lines look nicer now, but the ones that are missing are still totally missing (picture is the 2nd test print). Time to return it?

Good to know. Well I managed to source some new print heads for the MP610 on Yahoo auctions--$75 each. I'll get one, and if the printer reacts well I'll get another as backup. At least then I'll get through all this ink I have sitting around. Thanks for the info.
