Here in Japan, one of the 100 yen stores has started carrying quite a selection of recycled cartridges and refilling goods (including some chip resetters!). It turns out that all the cartridges and advertised ink types are for discontinued printer models. Wouldn't you know it that my MP610 bites the dust just as $2 replacement cartridges become available. Oh well.

I'm trying to figure out what new machine to get next, and I want to figure out which of these cartridges or inks will be compatible with a current model printer. I've tried to do some research but I just can't figure out which of the older type inks can be used in new machines, and which, if any, of the cartridges might fit.

I don't care about color accuracy as I'll mostly be printing flyers and advertisements.

The pages are in Japanese but you can get all the info necessary from the part numbers. Brands are Canon, Epson, and Brother. They're even helpful enough to inform you which cartridge types are refillable!

Cartridges:

Refill ink:
http://www.japan-ink.com/ink2.htm

If anyone can give me advice on which cartridges/inks I could use to refill a current model printer I'd really appreciate it!

The only one just looking at that list I would know that would be worth buying
and is still currently widely available is the pro 9000 II.

There may be others too but the 9000 can take anything you can throw at it,
however youll need to change the chips if you dont buy the printer in Asia..

Ouch, that's about 8 times more money than I was hoping to spend this time around! I really just want a cheap machine that will last a couple years if I have my fingers crossed.

Oh, and A4 size, no scanner is fine. Sorry for the lack of details previously.

It doesnt really matter if its A4 or not, youre not going to get the printer you want without spending money,
there are no more good A4 printers left now, even on EBay some of the good old A4 printers
are fetching as much as $1200, thats twice what an A3 printer will cost you.

You can pick up a new Canon A4 printer now for just a song but the running cost are horrendous
and none will work with these redundant discounted cartridges.

So youre stuck between a rock and a good A3 printer if you want to avail of these great offers. Sorry..:he

Good to know. Well I managed to source some new print heads for the MP610 on Yahoo auctions--$75 each. I'll get one, and if the printer reacts well I'll get another as backup. At least then I'll get through all this ink I have sitting around.

Thanks for the info.

Huh? Are you serious? Perhaps I haven't been following this forum carefully enough. My impression was that it's a little harder to refill some of the newer cartridges, but so what? Are the printers really no good? I've been refilling opaque cartridges and I've had no ink monitor for a long time, and neither is really difficult. So do you really mean that there are no good new printers left? I'm not disputing what you're saying, just asking for clarification.

Also, have you considered Epson, HP and other brands?

You have obviously read the whole thread and only quoted this bit, why ? "there are no more good A4 printers left now,"

But if you care to review it again youll clearly see it was in reference to this link:_ Cartridges: http://www.japan-ink.com/ink.htm
and was not intended to include, Epson, HP and any other brands?

The 525 cartridges printers are a breeze to use in comparison to the latest printer range from Canon
but you could always try using one of the new 551 cartridge printers yourself, just to get a better opinion on it.. :caf

here's a 551 refill video in german
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nueRbSEJA-4

makes me glad to be using 5 year old printer technology, ie PGi5's and CLI8's

refill count is over 450 refills, still refilling my 5 year old CLI8s, all 4 CLI8s are original, they keep going and going.....

The Hat, you're one of the gray eminences on this forum, so when you make a statement like that, I take notice. I was just wondering what you meant. That's all. It seems like a simple, direct statement, and the rest of the thread doesn't really seem to modify it. And when I said that perhaps I have not paid enough attention to this forum, I wasn't being sarcastic. I don't try to retain an encyclopedic knowledge of current models.

Perhaps it would have sufficed to say that there are no good Canon A4 printers left, because the 551 cartridge is too hard to fill -- assuming that that's what you meant. I'll leave it at that.
