Actually just checked and the WICReset app also supports the TS5000 series so it should be able to do what you need as an alternative to the Canon service tool. You'll need to purchase a WICReset key though. The instructions @PeterBJ provided for getting it into service mode still apply though.

Can provide a little insight in this. For now at least, most maintenance box units seem to have a respective resetter.

As waste ink is my bag I can tell you that your caution is well advised... The ET-8550 is supported for it's main waste ink output by the maintenance box that you can change out yourself... BUT, the platen waste ink pad (and counter) are locked away from the end-user and cannot be reset. Now...

Sounds like they were having problems with air getting into the CIS system. If you find that's a problem, check that the orange label hasn't been left on the top of the printhead. With our version 1 Pro-100 inks, yes, unfortunately very much yes.. With the version 2's... Less so but if memory serves there has been some limited reports of inks degrading less gracefully, or uniformly on the version 2's but pretty rare all told. In this instance though it does look to be...
