Hello!
I have both Colormunki Photo and SpyderPrint. I have been comparing the two. In order to do this, I have purchased ColorThink Pro. It is a bit buggy and idiosyncratic, but it works. I compared them in just two ways: gamut and color accuracy to a specified color list. My focus here is the SpyderPrint product. I am using a Mac that is running Yosemite.
One problem with this product is reading the color patches reliably. I found a technique that produces the best results, even though I still may need to reread some patches. This took a little time to figure out. But I find reading the targets patch by patch in this way provides the most accurate results. The second problem is calibrating the colorimeter accurately. Sometimes I get good profiles from SpyderPrint, and sometimes I do not. I found the problem was that the colorimeter does not calibrate itself reliably. So the white point is off much of the time. I find in order to get a good profile, I have to use their profile editor to reset the white point. But I find using Lab colorspace for this is a bit of a "trial and error" at times. But once the white point is properly set, I then usually make just one or two *minor* adjustments in their editor. I then end up with a fairly accurate profile this way using the 225 patch target. However, even though the profile ends up being a bit more accurate than the profile created by Colormunki Photo, the gamut space is noticeably *smaller* with the SpyderPrint.
How do I correct this problem? Read more patches using their "expert" 729 patch targets?
Basically I am finding out using the SpyderPrint product a PITA to use. But perhaps after I put in the effort using targets with a large quantity of patches, I will end up with a profile that has a gamut equivalent to the Colormunki Photo, and is noticeable more accurate. Otherwise, I will end up using Colormunki for my profiles.
So what do you guys think about all of this? Anyone having the same problems with SpyderPrint?
Bob
PS: I find that when I use SpyderPrint application to print targets, I find that in the printer dialog, the printer is selected for managing color instead of being greyed out. So I print the targets using the Adobe Color Printer Utility.
