Windows 10 PRO removed my PRO 9500 printer

Without any warning (although I blocked update of drivers).
Tried to reinstall the latest one from Canon (8.1) but no avail.
Did not insist.

Since I only use this printer for gloss overprint I installed it on my old Asus netbook with Windows XP.

Please check here how to install an unsigned driver on W10, this would apply to lots of drivers which were available for Win7 or W8,
but are not updated by the manufacturers for Win 10. Win10 doesn't like those and is removing them with every major function update.

This method applies to Epson or Canon drivers alike , or any other unsigned drivers. But there may still be other reasons why a particular driver may not work under W10, or only partially and missing this or that function , or only the printer driver is working but not the scanner.

As you state here correctly the whole system is replaced, probably together with previous configurations (anyway, what does it help to disallow driver updates while on a higher level the whole printer is removed).

It seems also to me that the drivers do not come directly from Canon but are versions embedded by MS.
But as long as Canon supports the printer and as long as Win 10 will be named Win 10 I hope to keep the PRO9500 MkII.

Building a PC museum is not my aspiration.

I think these drivers are supplied by Windows Update when doing a plug and play install. You can also find drivers at the Canon website. Here are the normal and XPS driver for the Pro 9500 mk ii and Windows 10 64 bit from Canon Europe. I suggest to try these drivers.

I cannot test these drivers as I don't have a Pro 9500 mk ii, but I made a test with a Pixma iP4000 and a laptop running Win 10 home premium 32 bit. According to Canon the printer is not compatible with Win 10, and for windows Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1 the driver is part of the OS or supplied by Windows update. Drivers for Win XP 32 and 64 bit are available.

I downloaded the 32 bit Win XP driver and unzipped it to a folder on the desktop. After unzipping it contained a folder named Disk 0. In this folder I located the exe file and right clicked it and selected run in compatibility mode for Win XP SP3.

The install program ran normally and the iP4000 is fully functional with this Win XP driver on the Win 10 laptop. I think this indicates you have a good chance of getting the Pro 9500 working on Win 10.

When installing a driver downloaded from Canon the printer must not be connected before the install program asks for it, just like when doing an install from the driver disk.

I use the "normal" driver and no problems with the Mk II. It is supported by Canon AND MS.
The 9500 Mk I is not but has been tolerated since the beginning (I did a new install of WIN 10 PRO with the 8.1 drivers at that time).

It is a new behaviour, that's why I signalled it.
It was no major release either (I have the autumn one since months).

Will try to reinstall one of these days just to understand ...

I thought the printer was the Mark 2 model from your profile. There are no Win 10 drivers for the Mark one model at the Canon website, but I suggest to try the driver for Win Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1 in compatibility mode for Win 8.1.

I have both 9500's.

I reinstalled this driver but the printer was not found (although I see it in the USB ports).

In "Canon My Printer" there is a "Diagnosis and Repair" button.
This utility found the PRO 9500 again ! (and the PRO 9500 II is still there too).

Probably it was only a problem with my many USB ports.

The situation is worse with MacOS. A few years ago I lent a niece a Canon MP540 which was used with a Macbook. The Macbook failed and was replaced with a new model using a newer OS - El Capitan. It was not possible to install the MP540 on the new OS, no driver was available. Luckily I had a Canon MG5150 which was accepted by the new computer.

Sorry for the panic .

I think I will have to clean up all those proprietary Canon printer ports.
Everytime you install a printer a new one is added.

Didn't find out yet how to do.
