What is a Canon chip dump?

I was looking at the printer forum at Badcaps.net and saw this thread.

Hmm. It seems they are referring to a copy of the printer's firmware that resides on the EEPROM chip on the logic assay board / motherboard of the printer. A "dump" is when you are able to copy the firmware from the EEPROM chip to another device/media such as hard drive.

IF the dump is legit and complete then you need to figure out how to "flash" it back onto an appropriate EEPROM chip without bricking the printer.

Still, interesting to see a printer holy grail may be reality, at least for some models.

Reflashing the EEPROM is used by some in case you cannot write to the EEPROM using a service tool. See this and this. You will need an EEPROM programmer that can do in-circuit reading and writing. It might be easier and less risky to buy the newest Service Tool from Ebay if it supports your printer model.

@Ron350, I reckon you don’t want to go there, it’s a place where lots of Canon door stops reside...

I sure don’t need any more dead Canon printers around here. Over the last two years seven Canon printers have become useless one way or another. I haven’t printed using a Canon in over six months now.
