Computers I use:- MacBook Air late 2014 with OS Catalina and Mac MINI with OS Big Sur. Occasionally use Dell Dimension 5150 with windows XP. Just home use.
Hi all. My Cannon MP560 has now stopped with "ink absorber full error 5B00". When switched on it just goes to error state and does not even move cartridges to middle in the replacement position so I can't see if ink absorber pads are over on right under cartridge rest positions like some printers seem to be and easily accessible for washing and refit.
I have done searches and believe the pads for MP560 may be right at bottom of printer and may require a lot of dismantling which at my age I don't feel I would be able to do any more (I used to be communications officer at sea and able to completely strip/rebuild/maintain the original CREED mechanical teleprinters). Also have read various comments about reseting ink waste counter which seemed to involve going into service mode and requiring service tool V1050 (?). Just was not able to follow most of the info as a lot of it was a bit vague and superficial in detail. (Probably age thing again).
My memory retention is poor so need written simple detailed instructions for most technical jobs now.......so now can't even print out a set of instructions to cary out above error rectification but could have one computer on with instructions to read as I go along.
Can anyone please help with full set of simple detailed instructions for complete way round fixing this Error 5B00. Cannon just say take to service agent, but I believe that would not be cost effective.

Second Question:
If, as I think It will be, more cost effective to get new printer with similar facilities what would be good replacement that would give less hassle and easier maintenance such as easy quick pad clean and reset; also would be more likely to stay in date with drivers as Mac OS changes occur; easy to refill cartridges - I currently use Octoinkjet ink with SquEasy bottles for refils with the Durchstich Method and a chip reseter and would like to continue with this as I have all the kit including the cartridge flushing gadget.
I am also fed up with Cannon attitude; recent problem was with update of OS on MacBook and it would no longer work the printer, then after a while (few days maybe weeks) just as I was about to look for new printer it worked again. Never did find out what story is with that. Have never been able to print from the Mac Mini with OS Big Sur, It seems to recognise the printer/copier is there but will not connect (wifi); printing from the Dell continued ok. Cannon need to get their finger out and co-operate with Apple to keep printers going.
Sorry if a bit of a rant but I can still keep my 1930s car running and get spares easily.....modern technology seems to be aimed at extracting the most money out of everyone by fair means or mostly foul.
Perhaps only good thing with this and new printer I would be able to update MacBook OS to newer version so I can operate in same way on both computers.

Instead of replacing the printer you could try to reset the ink absorber counter. Some say you can do that just once without replacing or cleaning the absorber pads. Others say you risk a nasty ink spill when the absorbers overflow as resetting a counter does not make the ink go away.

I recommend to first reset the counter, and if successful decide if you would take the printer apart to clean the absorber pads.

You find a service manual and a parts catalog in one file here. Click the button marked "Скачать" to download the manual. The service manual has the procedure for entering service mode on pages 47 to 50 and the parts catalog page 4 of 6 has a drawing showing the position of the absorber pads.

For service mode operation on this and similar printers I recommend the version 3400 of the service tool as this version works with both 32 and 64 bit Windows and XP and newer. This post has the service tool attached as a .rar archive.

Here is an instruction for entering service mode. For your printer in paragraph ii read"....press and release the Stop button 2 times..." instead of the 5 times in the instruction.

When doing service mode operations on a Canon printer a USB connection must be used. You cannot use wireless connection even if the printer might have this. It is also important that the printer you want to service is the only printer connected to the computer. If more printers are connected to the computer the service mode operations might not work. And the service tools only work with Windows, You cannot use MacOS or Linux.

Here is an instruction for doing the absorber counter reset. The same correction about pressing the Stop button 2 times instead of 5 applies.

I hope this is sufficient info to do the reset, else you're welcome write again.

BTW I know the Creed 7b page printer. I have owned and used a such noisy thing as a radio amateur.

Here is the required Service tool you need..

This is what it looks like when it has the correct file extension and icon..
Capture.JPG

But we can’t load exe files up here on the forum so I have changed the file to have a zip extension.

Just copy this file to your desktop and then rename it as.. .exe and the icon with change back to the correct one, please note this is not a zip file so don’t try to unzip it..

Thanks for the info.
BUT I fail at first fence!! trying on my MacBook air.
1.click the yellow button (in Russian) to down load service manual. Then I just get lost in "Yandex and various instructions and signing in and create a ...etc, etc,etc and get lost in the world of "Rocky Sands"

2. Service tool.....just copy this file to your desktop and rename to......exe. Cant find a way of "just copying" to desktop. It shows attachment as 'Service tool 3400.zip' but when I drag it and drop on desktop it comes out as something ending "webloc" and I now get completly lost again......can't seem to just get file to anywhere to rename to .exe

Sorry but I did say it needed to be simple......I see your info aught to be simple but perhaps this problem is an Apple/windows thing? I did see in the searching someone had a file of the russian translated to english but again I was not able to get anywhere downloading andopening,

Yes most of your issues are cause by Apple, try saving the file to a pen drive and then move to a PC and change the name there, if you do this correctly then you won’t need to visit the Russian site again.

This service tool only runs on a PC, sorry, and if you rename the file it will change to Service Tool V3400.exe, then you can run it, O’ just take your time because Patience can only be provided by you..;)

To download the service manual you can use the MacBook Air, but do not click the yellow button with the Russian text that translates to "Save to Yandex Disk" . Instead click the white button to the right marked "Скачать" which translates to "Download". That will downlead the manual in seconds. I scanned the downloaded manual and it is clean.

Here is my attempt at simplifying the instruction for entering service mode and resetting the absorber counter:

As mentioned before only a Windows computer can be used for the reset. On a Windows computer you rename the file posted by The Hat to "Service tool v3400.exe". Don't unzip the file.

When you have borrowed or bought a Windows computer, an old laptop of the XP era will do, you can enter service mode on the printer in this way:

To get the printer into service mode:
i. With the machine power turned off, press and hold the ON button. (DO NOT release the button.)
ii. When the Power LED lights, while holding the ON button, press and release the Stop button 2 times, and release the ON button. (Each time the Stop button is pressed, the Alarm and Power LEDs light alternately.)
iii. When the Power LED shows a constant light, the machine is ready for the service mode operations.
iv. The display will now show "Service mode" and "Idle"

now follow this procedure for the reset:

When the printer has entered service mode Windows will probably install a new printer or a "device". just allow this.

Make sure there is paper in both the cassette and the rear paper feed as you cannot predict which paper source the printer will use.

Now open the service tool. Check that "Main" is selected in the ink absorber counter, and "0" is selected in the "Counter value%" setting and then click "Set".
A small window "A function was finished" opens. Close this window by clicking OK. Now click the EEPROM button to get a print that verifies that the absorber counter has been reset. D should now be 000.0 or very close to 0.

Here is a screen shot with explanations:

The "Russian text file" is probably the instruction to enter service mode mentioned here. The mentioned file is part of a zip archive with the service tool and a text file in Russian, I didn't link to that download as Malwarebytes Browser Guard blocks the site due to a Trojan. You can override the blocking, but I don't recommend that.

How long ago did Canon start this 5B00 error? With what series and/or year? I never had an absorber issue with their older printers.

It was just that I never had that error even with 10k prints in a year back 15 or so years ago before I got a laser printer.
