Druckerchannel.de has an interesting article about these printers here or a Google translation to English here. The article has a very interesting video in English showing the inner works of these printers. It is seen that the print heads are slightly modified combined print head/sponge cartridges. The video only works from the original Druckerchannel site, it does not work from the translation.

Druckerchannel.de also has some news about the new A2 Canon Pro-1000 here or in English here.

Great post, Peter! I hope this new printer makes its way around the world for everyone to enjoy. I especially like how we can see the ink tanks and the ink levels externally without having to open the lid!

How does the printer maintain strict control on the refilling process, ie not let us refill with third party inks?

I have not seen any specific tricks to prevent refill with third party inks. But when you read the small print in the technical specs at the Canon India site you'll read that warranty is excluded in case such third party ink is used

'Using non-genuine inks may affect the printer's performance and/or the print quality. In some rare occasions, although there are no safety issues, using non-genuine inks has caused overheating of the print head and smoke emission from the print head due to the absence of an ingredient found in genuine ink. ' Quoted from the Canon India site

So usage of such ink is apparently technically possible, at the risk of loosing warranty.

The ink end sensor is specified as a (simple) drop count

And there is a note that service with parts is limited to 5 years after production has ceased.

That's apparently Canon's start with such CISS type models , like Epson did with the Lxxxx ITS models - integrated tank system, now with the 2nd generation of Ecotank models ET....

I think Canon India's explanation could suggest that something similar to the yellow CLI-42Y ink for Canon Pro 100 is used. This ink can cause gelling if it is mixed with aftermarket ink or even water.
