Sounds like a good plan.

I have Windows 7 as a seperate installation to the WIndows 10 Pro instance.
Do mean you have a dual boot computer or are Win 7 and Win 10 installed on separate machines?

Get my Windows 7 instance updated & do a full system drive backup
Is there a concern that by updating Win 7 you could also cause the printer problem?

Here's another thought (@mikling )...

The future doesn't require ink cart chips. They will not be needed when your printer is jailbroken. A jailbroken printer will allow pretty much anything, and have very few limits. Far fetched? It's already been done, to allow a 3D printer to use cheap, third-party, filament:

Epson, Canon, HP... A "few"

Yes... Actually it has XP on there as well but that's not in use... Handy for diagnosing folks problems who still haven't upgraded though.

That had occurred to me so I've already taken the firmware details from both printers so that I'll be able to ID if Win7 has a similar surprise in store..

Going to be a little while before I can get to it though as we've a few other problems to deal with... Will post up as/when ready.

This is just wishful thinking, that will never happen with a Canon printer, well not in the lifetime of my printers... :fl

@The Hat, maybe not, true... but I think there have been many other times, from my reading past posts, that it seemed 'impossible' to refill and someone found a way. I think it will be this way for many years to come, at least.

@Hector Vilches, Refilling will always be a challenge with many of our printers and long may it be so, but 3rd party printer drivers will never work with the Canon printer.

It’s the one bone of contention that most have when using their printer, some restrictions can be ridiculous...

Who knew some third party cartridges could contain original HP chips?!

Overall, good move from HP, though it sounds like they will continue to block some aftermarket chips in the future.

If a HP cartridge is remanufactured it is no longer considered OEM even if it was made by HP and still contains an original chip. I think this is what they mean. they probably want to block ARC chips. And when Canon introduced the PGI-5/CLI-8 chips they claimed it was to protect the printer user against making the terrible mistake of installing an ink cartridge in a wrong place. And I thought it was to make refill difficult.
