OK...
The same happened to all of the cartridges
The video I started with was this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaxI2QPWLWA

I've looked at other videos and they all use an orange clip before filling with ink
The above video didn't mention :(

Is this where I went wrong?

EDIT: where do I buy these orange clips from?
I can't find on eBay. What are they called?

Thanks

The orange clips come with new carts, so people just save them. You can buy these, which I prefer, as you don't need rubber bands.

If you have to print tonight, just block the cart's exit with your thumb (while wearing a rubber glove) until you can plug the refill hole. Not the recommended procedure, but ....

@Grandad35 thanks for the reply
i taped the carts exit with aluminum tape and refilled
leaking was still there, but controllable (but hugely messy)

EDIT: where can i get those clips in the UK?
+ rubber band?? can u give some links to videos that show how to do... i probably don't need now... but would be good just to have a look

i think the big big big problem was that 4 of the carts had been german filled previously
the ink just came dropping out within 10 min
i was advised before on another thread that it was ok to top fill carts that were previously german filled

this should with a hazard warning NOT to do :(
i taped the german fill method hole pretty good on all carts... but still not good enough
i assume that was the cause

the one cart that hadn't been refilled previously, did leak, but was ok and didn't drip dry

2 hours of wasted time + lesson well learned :(

Aluminum tape really isn't very forgiving/pliable. During top-refilling, the outlet has to be air tight. You could use black electrical plastic tape instead. That's more piable. The hole from "german refilling" shouldn't make much difference, but I would use otherwise unaltered OEM carts for top filling.

@turbguy thanks for the reply

so ur saying that the plastic tape is better than aluminium?
i've got plenty of the stuff!
i actually purchased aluminium tape after the advice given on the video :(

the german method with the hole in *defintely* has an effect
i can't see where i could have gone wrong (apart from not knowing that u need those orange clips)

If there is an existing hole from the german method, I would seal it with something like this to form a permanent seal. If this hole isn't absolutely air tight, the cart will leak the entire time that the top fill hole is open.

One thing that all of the clips have in common is a soft, pliable rubber seal that conforms to the irregularities in the cart's exit. If you tape over the exit, make sure that no adhesive residue remains on the exit port.

All of them! LOL
I top fill all my CLI-8 and CLI-42 and have yet to found a need to tape over the fill plug.
As long as the plug has tight fit in the original fill hole, you need not worry about taping over the plug.

The exit port will of course leak if you have the fill plug removed during filling. You must use the original orange clip to seal the exit port or install one of the special ones that you can buy from cart refilling companies.

So reset, attach orange clip securely, now you can remove the fill plug, add ink and re plug.
If you have the orange clip removed and you then fill, you will of course get a dripping cart. If you then plug the fill hole the cart should stop dripping.
Assuming there are no other air leaks as in previously German Filled Carts!

@Grandad35, thanks
i've actually got as glue gun already - haven't ever used!
i'll put this to use

the things is, i sealed both the top and the german hole - and it still leaked empty
so i assume that would suggest that i didn't have airtight?

@jtoolamn, the video i gave a link to where i learned the wrong way... said you could use tape instead of a plug. i think i need to get some plugs judging from ur feedback
