I would imagine the air required for the ink to flow to the print head wouldn't change no matter how big a hole is, atmospheric pressure remains the same. The size of the hole would affect evaporation but at the rate & price of the inks we use I can't see it being a problem.
You have never been so lucid. What happened? :gig

"to tape or not to tape", this Q seems to pop up every now and then. taping can't hurt, except for the time it takes to un-tape and re-tape.

i've been refilling for over 4 years, have refilled 300+ ink carts, never taped, never leaked, except when i over fill....

all 4 of my CLI8s are original, over 4 years old, each has been refilled 35+ times.

like much of this "refilling art", there are different ways to get it done, it's whatever you feel works best for you

Someone here already did that, I can't remember who & from what I remember the time span for evaporation didn't seem a worry for me with the time between my refills.
Canon would engineer their cartridges to occasional users who may only print now & then but I only print 13x19 prints on average a weekly basis so evaporation is the least of my worries.
