iP1900 printer attached and switched on, while WIN10 was set up and installed the drivers for three attached printers.
I think this may be the culprit for Win10 not installing the printer using its native drivers. According to the posts above, the printer must not be previously installed, turned on, or even be plugged into your motherboard when you first install on Win10. I think this is the way Canon wants an install done with its printers that I have seen, though I haven't seen them all. :idunno

Turn off the printer, unplug the printer from your computer, uninstall the printer from your computer, reboot your computer and try the install again as per above.

Plugging the printer in and turning it on will initiate an attempt on Plug-and-Play install. That's fine if the install is a success. If this doesn't work or the printer is incompletely installed, the printer must be deleted from the system before proceeding.

When Microsoft Update finds no suitable printer driver, you will have to install an older printer driver in compatibility mode for that OS it is intended for. For this install to be successful the printer must not be connected to the computer and not be turned on. When the install is near complete you will be asked to (1) connect the printer to the computer via USB and (2) turn the printer on. This is the traditional way of installing a Canon printer. The reason the printer must not be connected before asked for is that else an attempt on plug and play install will mess up the whole process.

I guess that this means that Java is not installed. Java is not favored by many for the security aspects. If it is necessary for the downloads how does WIN10 download the other drivers successfully?

Yes, or it might be installed and disabled. You can check your list of installed apps to see if Java is installed:

If that is part of Win10 then that is very nice!

Hearing plenty of good things recently, I am going to install Win 10 before the free upgrade expires.

It is nothing special. It is part a modernized version of the good old start menu. The nice thing about W10 compared to W8/8.1 is that the start menu is back in a recognizable form. I had to use the nice little program "Classic Shell" to bring back the classic start menu and the boot to desktop in W8. Such modifications are not necessary with W10, as the new start menu is a combination of the classic start menu and the New/Metro UI tiles from W8/8.1. Here is the start menu from my W7 laptop with Java highlighted:

No Java, nothing between I and M.:)

Yes, 10 has some nice features and is similar to 7, if you want it to be, but a little more spread out, lists take up more space, it's the hidden nasties, that may be an irritation. There is a very noticeable speed increase in some applications.

Looking at Peter's program list, if we could see all of it, I reckon we could analyse his character and habits.:):ep

Not unless you could read Dutch.. :hugs
How about Danish instead?

Only a few of the folders need translation/comments, most are named after the programs.

The 3 first from the top are Windows folders and I think XPS-fremviser would be XPS viewer in English. I subscribe to AVG internet Security and the first AVG folder is for this program. The next two folders are for AVG optional extra programs that I don't subscribe to. MozBackup allows backing up and restoring settings, bookmarks and mails for Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird. "Spil" is a Windows folder and would likely be "Games" in English. "Tilbehør" is also a Windows folder and would likely be "Accessories" in English. "Vedligeholdelse" is also a Windows folder and would likely be "Maintenance" in English.

Most of the menu items on the right don't need translation, "Billeder" = "Images" and "Enheder og Printere" = "Devices and Printers".

As you see, a standard W7 installation with a few typical programs installed. The laptop has limited resources, so to avoid slowing it down too much I try to only install "need to have" programs and avoid "nice to have" programs
