Removed the head, cleaned contacts, no avail

The blue led (power) is on, and the orange blinks 5 times again and again

So can be this too:

5 times ASF (cam) sensor error [5700] - Sheet feed unit (QM3-1672)

The printhead moves as usual when I open the cover and all cartridges leds are lit.

Got it past the error once, but it only prints blank pages (and nozzle checks).

It doesn't print at all.

At startup it comes in this situation:
- blue led steady on
- orange repeating cycles of 5 blinks

What I try do understand in the first place is what error I have:

- operator call error 5 times > print head not installed [1401], [1403], [1405], solution: install the printhead properly (what I already did twice)
or
- service call error 5 times: > ASF (cam) sensor error [5700], solution: sheet feed unit

When I release the rear paper feed plate (by slightly turning the cam), the printer does a paper feed at startup.
By doing this it once passed the startup without errors, but when I printed a photo, it did it without any trace of ink. Same for the nozzle check.

Printhead does all the regular moves and shakes.
Cartridge leds are lit and indicate the right condition (blink when I insert an empty cartridge).

I managed again to pass the startup (by the paper feed trick), and have now the proof it is the operator error .

Sorry Jan, but the print head is dead and there’s no coming back from that, I had exactly the same problem on mine, it worked one minute but not the next.

You didn’t do anything to make it go bang yourself it just happened for no apparent reason and now you have to suffer the cost of replacement.

I still think there is a major design flaw in all of these 8 plus cart print heads, there are too many of them expiring far too early then they should be.

@palombian head went not from a clog or from the use of bad inks but from everyday normal use as did mine; and I also got these conflicting error messages which didn’t make any sense, so you got my sympathy also..

I refilled it maximum 5 times, about the same was done in it's previous life.
Maybe Canon considers a new head every 10 cartridge changes normal (the price is about the same) ?
Or has it something to do with refilling (overheating ?).

Or, as the manual states, the maximum life is 5 years ?
In that case buying a new head is useless since one day or another the printer will switch itself off.

In a nut shell yes that’s exactly what happened and your logic board is fine, trust me on that, and a new head will have everything working back as normal.

Yes I know it stinks but until we can find out what is happening to these heads we’re at the mercy of Canon Inc, and you can be sure they won’t own up to a design fault issues.

I had filled my carts thirty or forty times so cartridge change is not in question and my head went in just under 4 years so it doesn’t have a set turn off time either..

What you imply is conscious programming of which there is zero evidence at this time. If found true would most likely cost Canon much more money from a seriously injured reputation and lost sales that would far exceed the profits from replacement head purchases.

The more likely scenario is a design or manufacturing flaw, where that flaw resides is open for conjecture.

But that's what is printed

Let's read it then as an indication of expected life.
Based on an average of 500 "pages" per cartridge set, 21.000 makes 40 changes or 8 per year over 5 years.
Most amateurs print much less.
I can live with that.

Let's hope I had just bad luck this time.
