Is there a way to make my Canon PIXMA iP1600 recognize a high capacity cartridge, Canon PG-50, instead of the standard Canon PG-40?

Uh Huh, a little gotcha there. The option of moving up to a PG50 is there for the MP multifunction printers. On the "throwaway" models, where the price of the printer including cartridges is LESS than the combined cost of the cartridges themselves while on promotion, the option of using a larger cartridge appears to be restricted. Now I wonder what Staple is going to do with that extra cartridge now that the seal is broken.

Have you considered refilling it? The PG40s are as easy as it gets for refilling. A pocketknife or screwdriver, good ink, syringe and needle, and some scotchtape and you're good to go. For approx half of what you paid for the PG50, you can refill your PG40 and CL41 many times.

Thanks, mikling, for the info.
But I'm wondering if there is a firmware update, or any type of workaround, that will allow the printer to recognize and use the hight capacity cartridge?
