What's the difference between Canon CLI-526 cartridges and Canon CLI-226 cartridges?
Can I swap the chips from the 526 to some 221 (220?) and have it fully work on my MX892?

As long as the carts are physically the same you can put your chips on the other carts. with my pixma mg5250 the 525/526 carts are not transparent but the 520/521's have a transparent window (easier to fill).
So i bought some empty 520/521's from ebay flushed them and put my original chips on them and now have refillable carts that are easier to see when filling.

There is no difference in either cartridge except the chips which are regional, 526 EU and 226 US.
You can use either 221 or 521 cartridges which are semi transparent (Easy fill)
just swap over your current chip and that will make them work on your MX892..
