How do you enter the service mode on the MP990 to see the date it was put into service and the number of pages printed

Here goes…

Power off the printer then hold in Resume button and power button together.

Release the Resume button only, then press the Resume button twice slowly and then release the power button.

Your printer will enter Service Mode in about ten seconds after the Power button light stops flashing, if the above procedure doesn’t work then try pressing the Resume 5 times instead of twice.

You may also require a Service Tool to carry different functions like the service print information etc., you’ll need V3400 or V3600, please note these Services Tools can de destructive if not used carefully, PM me and I’ll send you one.
You must use a USB connection, no other..

The procedure to enter service mode is normally found in the service manual. I searched for a free download, but found none. Here is a paid download for the service manual and parts catalog for 12 USD.

As the printer is of the PGI-x20/CLI-x21 generation, I think the procedure mentioned by The Hat with pressing the stop/resume button twice will work. It is the same procedure as for the MP540 of the same generation in this post. This is for service tool version 2000, but the procedure is the same for newer versions of the tool.

See this post for a download link for the service tool v3400. I just tested the link and it still works. AVG Internet Security found nothing wrong with the download.

No, I sent it as a Zip file extension, so don’t try to open it till you rename it back to Exe.. :)

When the printer says "Idle" on the display, this indicates that it has correctly entered service mode.

I think you mean the link from the Russian site? Here is the link: http://resetters.ru/?showtopic=16305 . It is important to use the original Russian site, download does not work from a Google translated site for some reason. I just tested the download again, and as can be seen, it works; click to enlarge:
' download st3400-1.jpg

The file is a zip archive even if my computer thinks it is .rar. I think this is because I have Winrar installed. Windows, any version should be able to unpack .zip archives.

In this post with the link to the Russian site, there is a screen shot. This is an image, and clicking the link in the screen shot does of course not work, even if I added a red arrow and text saying click this link. :) Could this be the problem with my post?

So you didn't zip the file but just renamed it to .zip? The file should not be unzipped but just renamed to .exe?
