A google search will find many of the service manuals, but you have to wade through a lot of garbage to find them. This site offers a good many of them for free:

http://soft-manufaktura.ru/servman.html

If its a PDF, it should be safe to open. I would be wary of any that require you to run a program as an executable as it could be a virus or trojan. Unzipping should be fine, but running executables is risky as you don't know if the program is safe or not.

inca If its a PDF, it should be safe to open.
I wouldnt be too sure about that, as PDF can and do carry viruses and the rest..
Just a word of caution, be carefull what you click on..

I am probably stating what is obvious to many , but (for newbies) , if your exact model is not listed , the model number nearest it can often be quite helpful , especially if its just how to gain access to the inside (i.e.the case is similar) , if you have dropped something in there or there is an obstruction in the print path.

Sometimes the hardest part of the repair is gaining the initial access , after that it can be quite simple if the problem was physical/mechanical.

As The Hat said, PDF's are most definitely NOT to be considered safe... There are now more attacks and exploits aimed at PDF's as any of the traditional BAT, SCR or EXE approaches.

Avoid ass-u-me -ing anything anymore and get a good anti-virus/malware scanner

According to these links, using Acrobrat reader, which reads only, PDF files are safe.

http://news.cnet.com/New-virus-travels-in-PDF-files/2100-1001_3-271267.html

Fortunately, those who are simply viewing a PDF, or Portable Document Format, file aren't vulnerable. The virus spreads only by way of Adobe's Acrobat software--the program used to create PDF documents--not through Acrobat Reader, the free program that is used to view the files.

"There is no way for this to affect Acrobat Reader," said Adobe's Sarah Rosenbaum, director of Acrobat product management. "The code in Acrobat that recognizes attachments does not exist in Reader."

Rauth is quick to underscore that viruses can only be borne by attachments, not PDF files themselves. "PDF shall remain a secure format."

The original caution still stands, and I think you should be careful what you read before you post it.
Both of those articles are all most ten years old, so their creditability is a big fat zero now.
Once again be careful what you click on, you just might get it..Ops. :(

Perhaps it would be worth me adding that I provide tech support and consultancy services for a few schools as well and as such I have to be up to date on what is a potential security risk...

So, please take it as read that PDF's are a major security risk...

By all means, ignore this advice but I would hate for you to reinvent the wheel by finding out first hand who was right on this...

Websnail. Please educate us. No one should open a PDF? How does one know if its safe or not? Can you give us some links to support your warning? Based on what I read and re-posted above, opening a PDF with Acrobat reader is safe.

If we are posting links to PDF's then saying they are a major risk, then what's the point of posting them?
