I bought a full set of G & G ink cartridges for my Canon ip4200 after a disaster trying to refill OEM cartridges for the first time. I got so frustrated that I threw the OEMs in the trash and ordered the G & G.

Of course, the printer says it doesn't recognize the G & Gs. I had no idea I needed the chips!

Is there any way out of this, some kind of workaround a partially inept fiddler-about can do?

Thanks for your help.

There is only one thing you can do: get new chips. Take a look at the empty cart category at ebay if you don't want to spend the $ on new carts.
Please note that the chips have color codes, so you will need one chip of each color. They also must be labeled appropriately, otherwise you will have trouble to decide which chip goes on which cart.

I would add that everyone's first refilling experience is the time when mistakes and messes are made, unless one is lucky enough to have a friend who guides you through the process. If wayfarer describes his "disaster" we might be able to help him go on with refilling - the best way to beat Canon at the chip game!

Wayfarer, check out this ebay set of cartridges for your printer, ebay item #250096025592. There are two more days before this auction ends. It has all you need to get back to printing. You can return the G&G cartridges or keep them as spares. The seller has a perfect feedback score and the shipping charge seems not too bad. Well, you will be back to where you started in the first place. But this time get a refill kit for your printer and do it right. It should not be too hard. Look at this one on ebay, ebay item #250095671225. Good luck.

Hypnetserver - Glad to finally see these carts available empty on ebay. No need for anyone to feel "screwed" by the chipped carts as long as they can 1) buy a few sets of empty carts and 2) start refilling. Obviously not as easy as popping in an aftermarket prefilled cart, but better in terms of having a trusted ink set.

Very few of them are available on eBay actually. This shows that Canon's market share is still very small comparing to HP's. There are tons of HP empty cartridges on eBay. Canon's marketing strategy is very poor in my opinion. It needs to go back to BCI-6's chipless cartridges in order to win market share still.

HPnetserver - Actually one part of their marketing makes lots of sense for them. Create a new line of printers that use a new proprietary cartridge that can not be duplicated in the aftermarket world, and hype the ink as more long lasting. The second part of the equation doesn't make sense at all. I see very few of the new printers advertised anywhere. The only ones I see are the multifunction units. They appear to have fallen down in marketing of the entire range of their printers. Not seeing lots of empty carts in a place like ebay is certainly a symptom of lack of popularity of these new printers. I can't believe that the major issue with presumed low sales figures is lack of aftermarket carts/inks, as I believe that the vast majority of Canon users, even with the bci-6 carts, still buy OEM carts.
