scanners, anyone?

The title here is "Everything Else"... would that include scanners? Maybe I got lucky and ended up at THE place to ask about some problems with scanners. Here I find the proper use of irreverance! At least here they could tell me the proper spelling of "irreverance".

Do you have a scanner that's misbehaving or do you want recommendations for a scanner for a particular purpose or?

what type of scanner you are looking for? It depends on your needs, If you daily looking for a daily folder scanner then better to go with a local one but If your needs are beyond it then go for the other one mentioned you need here I'll suggest you accordingly.

Thank you, but I already have a scanner, an Epson 4490. When I'm in the Auto mode I can't get at the speed to adjust it. It's in a slow mode and I want a faster mode for non-critical results.

My scanner is an Epson 4490 and it meets my needs. Thanks for the suggestions, however!

I have an Epson Perfection V33 scanner that I think is similar to yours except for having no film scanning/transparency adapter lid.

Using Professional mode instead of Auto mode will give access to a lot of settings. Using a high resolution slows down the scan and using a low resolution speeds up the scan. On select scanner models you can select a speed priority mode which should speed up the scanning process.

If you click the + sign at "Image Type" 1, You can select speed priority scanning 2. On my scanner it seems to make no difference though, maybe my scanner is not one of the select models?

The other responses about your specific Epson software may answer your question, but I'm a satisfied user of VueScan. I run an ancient Canon 8400f scanner and VueScan has speeded up my scanning. It supports your Epson scanner and is available here: https://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/epson_perfection_4490.html The trial version puts a watermark on scans, but you can try it out with almost full functionality as I recall. I bought the basic version of VueScan and after I'd used it awhile I liked it enough to spring for the Pro version, which gives lifetime upgrades.
