Reviving a Canon pro 10

Hi All,

I just acquired a canon pro 10 for nothing. However, the printer was not used for 5 years so I could not be tested. The ink cartridges dried, I weighed them and they were not empty but dried. So I bought a set of Octoink cartridges for the pro 10 to test if the printer was alive.

I put some glass cleaner in a kitchen paper and move the print head on top of it (like in Jose's video) and waited for 1 day. Then I run a deep cleaning and several nozzle checks and normal cleanings. It looks like the nozzle check (in attachment) looks more or less fine. Although the colors do not look very strong and the black parts are not very black.

when I try a test print image (standard Image) the colors look faded like if put the paper on the other side. I tested on Mate paper and Gloss, the same problem.

Could it be that the nozzle does not deliver enough ink because they are partially blocked or for some other reason?

Also, another thing, if you look carefully at PM, the beginning of the pattern is missing, maybe 0.5mm. This does not go away with cleaning.

Hi @marco565 and welcome, congratulations on getting a great printer, and by just looking at your current nozzle check print it looks fine to me, yes there are a few anomalies, but given time the head will clean up the more you use it,

Now you need to rinse out the old set of carts with some fairy washing up liquid and warm water and then just water and that will get them ready to accept new ink, and don’t forget to reset the chips before refilling, O’ you did remember to get a resetter too..

This maybe just down to the compatible inks, try adjusting the colours in the Colour/Intensity Tab..

Tip:- try flooding the purge pads (Parking station) with W5 glass cleaner and then run a cleaning cycle, this will help clear out any old ink that was left in the purge unit, you can repeat the process again a few hours later just to be sure.. Now go and enjoy printing..

I noticed from the nozzle check that PC looks darker than C. Could the C and/or PC cartridge be filled with the wrong ink?

Thanks for your comment I have read a lot of topics where you commented on this forum.

I will clean the pads, let see if it does something. I don't know yet if I will be refilling or using OEM cartridges, depending on whether I keep my ET8550.

@PeterBJ Possibly, at least on my side the cartridges are placed correctly.


I don't know if it's worth to by OEM now, knowing that the printer does not print correctly yet with Octoink. (maybe it's because I have a bad batch of octoink ?)

I let the printer after cleaning overnight, run a nozzle check again, nothing has changed so I am not entirely sure that letting the printer sit more time will change something, I will see.


EDIT: To be honest, after letting dry the print overnight I don't think is that awful like yesterday. there are still some problems in the back and white gradation.

Should I buy OEM cartridges or I should wait?

I noticed that too, but didn’t want to say anything, because I taught he’d got the prefilled carts from OctoInkjet..:hide

Should I try to invert the carts? On glossy paper the quality of the print is yet very bad compared to my ET8550, on mate paper after letting it rest for 24h is ok. I also tried the fine art setting which does improve a bit the contrast. I have some banding in the middle of the color grading for the cyan and green. It might just be related to the lack of profile but it could also be that the PC seems darker than the C.

Hi @marco565, you can't interchange carts, they are coded for the print head slot, that's why @The Hat suggested to swap chips. When I did all my learning, 3 years ago, I had looked at swapping chips on a yellow cartridge. I judged it too risky for my toolkit (craftsmanship), so I opted to do the cleaning of dried cartridges. I can only say that, although it's a lengthy process, I am totally happy with the result. I did a full set.

As far as the nozzle check print, I have not really seen shades that make sense. The color itself is OK, but the shades don't seem to match the names. The grey is darker than the black, the PM and PC are darker than the M and C. But the print results are OK. That's the important part. The only thing I look for on the check print is that the fields are even. Then I am OK. I do like the PRO-100 very much. And it not just the printing. The paper handling is nice and sharp. I like it when a printer clicks ^_^

@The Hat mentioned W5. I have not seen that in our local markets, but I assume it is a "Windex" product or a knock-off. Reading from another source (reliable??? Youtube), apparently the important part is, that it should not contain odorless ammonia. I am no chemist, but I went with that advice. I use the old "original" Windex.

@marco565, are you doing any hiking today, it's minus 26 C with a 20 kmh wind here in Calgary. Brrr....

Nothing wrong with PC and Cyan in the nozzle test of @marco565. It's normal that the PC band looks a bit darker than the Cyan. It has been always this way on my Pro10s, either with OEM inks or afterwards with Octoink products.
Likewise, GY looks as dark as PBK or MBK. Instead, MA is a bit darker than PM, as one would expect.
