I am thinking of buying a Canon pixma ip 5300 but am conerned about some of the stories i have heard about the problems refilling the cartridges. I understand they carry a chip which senses when the cart is empty. How do you reset it , zap it or what to be able to refill and continue to print ?

hey,

that is simple, just press the paper feed button for 5 sec and it is done.

For the CLI-8 cartridges that is.

Although this manual was written for the IP4300, it probably is correct for the IP5300 as well. Canon's own warning popup window when a cartridge is "empty" gives complete instructions on overriding usually.

The above manual also has some nice troubleshooting tips that may help you one day. Read from page 17 onward for the info you seek.
