And here is a very detailed instruction from druckerchannel.de, or in "Denglisch" here.

But with opaque cartridges and without a resetter this is less than ideal. Does anybody know if the refillable cartridges with intelligent ARC chips offered by mikling are also available for Canon region 5 = Europe?

Octoink sell them as a refill kit which i assume are Europe/UK versions.
http://www.octoink.co.uk/products/PGI550-%2b-CLI551-Refill-Kit-Bundle-[5-x-125ml].html for a set WITHOUT the grey ink

http://www.octoink.co.uk/products/PGI550-%2b-CLI551-Refill-Kit-Bundle-inc'-Grey-[6-x-125ml].html for a set WITH the grey ink

You can also top fill OEM CLI-551/PGI-550 from my most recent looking around, similar to other canon carts, IE remove ball and seal in fave fashion.

Refilling the OEM cartridges are probably preferred by most but there is no telling how long the chip will last on these carts before going bang, plus you end up with far more cleaning cycles with no ink monitoring.

I am current using a set of refillables from Octoinkjet and they are working out ok, compatibles are never as good as OEM carts but these work better because they have ARC chips, it’s much better than printing blind..

correct me if I am wrong but most models will only come with starter cartridges (unfillable) and you will presumably still have to purchase a XL OEM set which is going to cost a fair bit plus your ink bundle as I assume the new CLI521 inks recently bought will not be compatible.

They sound as much fun as the HP364's which does not have a resetter

That is correct these models only come with start-up cartridges with just a drain of ink in them, which then forces the new owners to purchase the same size cartridges again or the more expensive XL ones.:barnie

Neither of these cartridges has resettable chips so if you refill them you’ll have to guess how much ink is left in the opaque OEM cartridges, the OEM paper chips can’t be reset and you then get a huge increase in ink wastage.:hit

The only option open to a new owner is to be fleeced buying the OEM’s or get a set of compatibles with ARC chips and refill them (Much Cheaper) option, the CLl-521 inks are not a good match but will most definitely work satisfactory, I use the CLl-8 inks for mine. :)

**Latest news there are now ARC chips available for the OEM carts for those that do not wish to use compatible carts..

A link please?

There might be one more problem, checking the Canon UK website it seems that both the CLI-42 inks and CLI-x51 inks are the Chromalife 100+ generation, so maybe refilling a CLI-x51 Y cartridge could also cause gelling. Maybe flushing another colour OEM cartridge until water runs clear and then some more, and relabelling it to Yellow would be a better approach if you want to use refilled OEM cartridges with the new ARC chips attached.

@PeterBJ you may be right about the gelling but I don’t know I just dumped the OEM’s in favour of easy refill compatibles so I didn’t have that problem, you can get new inks for these cartridges if you so wish.

I imagine a good rinse with Windex or Fairy will clear out any remaining ink that maybe left in the sponge and then if you want to be doubly sure leave the cartridges soaking in some of @pharmacist solution over night.

This is the only trade link I have at present but I am sure there are other sites available for individual purchases.
