question about icc profiles for non oem ink

Hi I am a bit confused about icc profiles. I will use my printer as an example. I use a Canon pro 100 and my paper is canon pro luster, my ink is non OEM (Precision colors). Here is my question:

When configuring the printer using the Canon ICC profile for pro luster paper, my understanding is that that profile is for the Canon paper and Canon ink. However I am not using Canon ink so does that defeat the use of the Canon ICC profile for pro luster? I should note here that I followed the directions on the Precision web site for their ICC ink profile. Does that somehow integrate with the Canon ICC pro luster profile. IE: exclude the Canon ink and adjust the Canon ICC pro luster profile for the use of non OEM (Precision Color ink)? I am experiancing difficulty matching color on my monitor to hard copy prints and I am wondering if it is due to a an incorrect ICC profile.

Your help on this matter would be appreciated

regardless of the paper selection in the printer driver dialog if you desecelct color management in the drivers the driver will just NOT perform any ICC changes with the data it recieves. a similar paper choice in the driver with deactivated CM will just ensure the printer uses the correct paper thickness and paper transport to feed the paper trough while printing

If you have a custom ICC for the Ink > Papier combination you should select this profil within your printing software such as PHotoshop or Qimage itself and "let the software do the Colormanagement for you"

thanks for your reply. I don't have a custom profile that accommodates both the paper and ink. I use lightroom which I assume manages the printer. However it uses the canon pro luster profile which leads me back to my question.

When you, as cls said, set color management to None in the printer driver, together with the paper type, size, quality etc (LR Page Setup button), and select Color managed by printer and the profile installed by Canon for your paper (at the right in LR Print module), you should not be far off since IS ink matches Canon close.

Mike has created a ton of custom profiles for a TON of different papers and his new inks for FREE!!! Get them and all will be solved.

Thank all of you for your replies to my question.. Mr Toolman has opened new questions for me. I have much to learn about how ICC profiles work with hardware and software. Currently for my canon carts I followed the precision color EZ directions for installing the ink ICC profile into the windows printer preferences and I chose the paper type there. The printer not lightroom now manages the color. Am I correct that each time you change paper types you have to go into windows printer preferences and change the paper type>? Does the lightroom soft proofing work if the printer is managing the color?

OK Here is a little known secret about the PRO-100 and probably the PRO-10 and 1 driver as well.
If you go to the Matching tab as if you are going to tell it to be set to NONE, but this time you click on ICM and in the drop down menu you will see ALL your installed profiles. Pick the one for say Pro Luster.

Now you can print to PRO luster ( Make sure you choose Pro Luster as the paper choice of course ) and STILL let the Driver "Control Color".
In other words you would NOT be controlling color through any of your Editing Apps in order to actually be technically printing through and ICC profile.

Either way it works the same. Either set Color Matching to ICM and choose the correct paper profile but let the printer driver continue to control color. OR.... set Color Matching to NONE and let the Editing app control color through the proper MATCHING ICC profile.
Either method will work.
The prints will still look identical.

Hint. When you print through say PS and choose the CANON Studio Print Shop Plugin to print from and you choose PRO Luster or ANY other paper choice ( Canon Line ) within its choices, it will automatically set up the driver to do the same I've described.
The driver is technically controlling color BUT is actually doing so through the proper ICC profile for the paper type you have chosen.
It doesn't get any easier than that!

Thanks toolman . You are correct it is a hidden factor. I called Precision Colors today and talked to Mike. He is quite a guy and spent much time guiding through the lightroom ICC setup. What you say here was one of the things I learned. It turns out that my lightroom ICC setup had been wrong all along. It made a huge impact on my screen to print match. I am a very happy camper. Kudos to you as well.

Check that you printer does not have any ink problems (blocked ink heads, lack of ink, etc..)

What makes you think its a supply problem? When the thread is related to ICC profiles? Seems to me that you are trying to steer the conversation to ink supply.......am I right
