I'm thinking about buying a used Pro 9500 Mk II. I want to check the mileage by printing a diagnostic sheet, and I recall there is a certain order to press the buttons to make it print one. I know its here on the forum somewhere but I cannot find it.

Anyone has a link how to do this?

Found your thread asking the very same thing - but for a Mark I - back in September 2013:

http://www.printerknowledge.com/threads/defective-pro-9500.8062/

Take note of PeterBJ's caution in the difference between the Mark I and Mark II -- you need to use a Service Tool to enter Service Mode, ie the printer must be connected by USB cable to a computer and the computer must have a Service Tool on the hard drive to be run to get to the EEPROM report/print out.

Link to Mark II service manual (seems to be offline at the moment): http://www.printerknowledge.com/thr...anuals-post-them-here.5071/page-12#post-65506

Link to Russian web site that has various Service Tools: http://resetters.ru/?showtopic=16305 Always scan downloaded files for maleware before using. You can scan the .exe file at Virustotal.com. Norton's Security Center scan flagged and deleted both the available tools after download. This may be a false positive. I do not know which service tool you should use, though V3600 seems a logical one to start with.

Running a suspect file in a Sandbox (like Sandboxie) or Virtual Machine (Google "virtual machine") would help prevent potential infection.

Oops, I forgot about that :( Funny that I missed my own post.

I searched my PC and I still have the service manual for the 9500 mk I.

This is what I was looking for (copied from the service manual):

=============
<Service mode operation procedures>

1) With the printer power turned off, while pressing the Resume/Cancel button, press and hold the Power button. (DO NOT release the buttons. The Power LED lights in blue to indicate that a function is selectable.)

2) While holding the Power button, release the Resume/Cancel button. (DO NOT release the Power button.)

3) While holding the Power button, press the Resume/Cancel button 2 times, and then release both the Power and Resume/Cancel buttons. (Each time the Resume/Cancel button is pressed, the Alarm and Power LEDs light alternately, Alarm in orange and Power in blue, starting with Alarm LED.)

4) When the Power LED lights in blue, press the Resume/Cancel button the specified number of time(s) according to the function
listed in the table below. (Each time the Resume/Cancel button is pressed, the Alarm and Power LEDs light alternately, Alarm in orange and Power in blue, starting with Alarm LED).
==========

I cannot copy the table, but according to the table pressing resume/cancel 2 times after step 4 will print the EEPROM information print. This way, I won''t need to connect a PC and use the service tool.

Maybe it will be the same for the Mark II.

The procedure for entering the service mode is the same for both models, but you cannot use push button codes for the service mode operations on the MKII model. Instead you need one of the service tools. Version 3600 is only partly translated from Chinese, so I recommend version 3400. The best source for this service tool is this post, where @CakeHole uploaded it as a rar archive.

The procedure for entering the service mode from the service manuals is not quite clear IMO. I have edited item 3 in the explanation slightly to make it more clear. My version is:

3) While holding the Power button, press and release the Resume/Cancel button 2 times, and then release the power button. (Each time the Resume/Cancel button is pressed, the Alarm and Power LEDs light alternately, Alarm in orange and Power in blue, starting with Alarm LED.)

Also see this first post of the service tool thread.

this file also is flagged and deleted automatically by Norton's Security suite. May be a false positive due to the nature of the app???

For a test I just downloaded and unpacked the file uploaded by CakeHole. It is the same 434 kB size as the service tool I had saved earlier, and it was considered OK by AVG Internet Security and Malwarebytes Antimalware. It also got a clean bill of health by virustotal with 0/55 detections. Link to the virustotal scan here. I am convinced the file is clean and safe, but maybe it was considered a hacker tool by Norton?

The file you scanned appears to have different file name than the file contained in the RAR file you linked in Cakehole's post. This difference was noted in the VirusTotal scan result you linked. However, the SHA-256 is the same, so the files are identical. If you look at the VirusTotal results now it will display my results, which have replaced the last (your?) scan performed. Of course, someone else may run their own scan on the same file and we will see their results.

My Norton Security Suite results:

File name: service tool v3400.exe

Threat name: WS.Reputation.1

Many Users
Thousands of users in the Norton Community have used this file.

Mature
This file was released 4 years 5 months ago.

Medium
This file risk is medium.

It most likely is a false positive given the nature of the file's function which modifies/manipulates machine function.

Also, note that VirusTotal does not include "Norton's" per se but does have Symantec in its scanning list. Yet the file did not trigger a positive finding on VirusTotal. Curious.

Here are the instructions from the Service Manual for the 9500 II.

i. With the printer power turned off, while pressing the Resume/Cancel button, press and hold the Power

button. (DO NOT release the buttons.)

ii. When the Power LED lights in blue, while holding the Power button, release the

Resume/Cancel button. (DO NOT release the Power button.)

iii. While holding the Power button, press the Resume/Cancel button 2 times, and then release

both the Power and Resume/Cancel buttons. (Each time the Resume/Cancel button is pressed,

the Alarm and Power LEDs light alternately, Alarm in orange and Power in blue, starting with

Alarm LED.)

iv. When the Power LED lights in blue, the printer is ready for the service mode operation.

2) Start the Service Tool on the connected computer.

Service Tool Version 3400.
Just copy to your desktop and rename as service tool.exe

The .rar archive uploaded by CakeHole contains the service tool .exe file and two text files. I only submitted the .exe file to Virustotal after unpacking, I didn't submit the .rar archive. Could this be the explanation?

No. I also scanned the file and not the RAR in VirusTotal.

I believe VirusTotal keeps a log of the last chronological scan done of the file and that is what your link displayed. Either your file is named differently or someone else used VirusTotal after you - but before me - and their file had a different name but the same SHA-256 (ie identical file even if the names are different).

It may be that the scan engine or malicious files library used in the scan for the Symantec portion of the VirusTotal scan is different (less) than that used by the Norton Security Suite that I used to scan the file.
