Martin, do you think that storing the carts upside down might make a difference ?.
After many years of dealing with Canon sponge based carts (BCI6, CLI-8..) I’m so used to store them in the normal position that I never thought of doing it the other way with the PGI-72s. Somebody here ( @stratman, I believe ) said that it would be better to store them upside down to avoid pigment particles settling on that thin outlet sponge, but at that same time, if they’re upside down, maybe the sponge will be more prone to dry if the cart isn’t totally full ?.

Anyway. as I’ve said here more than once, none of the other colors have had the slightest ink-feeding problem during the past 18 months, not even PBk and Y, that you mention as possible “troublemakers” along with magenta.

I always stored my PGI-9 carts outlet down (otherwise how do you see wich color is wich ?) and never had a problem.
Those pigment do not settle down so fast, if not you would have deposits in your bottles.

The stubborn reddish stains I try to remove (with Fairy = Dreft in Belgium - and a drop of ammonia) are not only pigment particles.
Is it a reaction with OEM ink ?
Could be with water or isopropanol too.
After rinsing with demineralised water the maze does not accept dripped ink well, that's why pharmacist solution helps.
We will find out ;).

In terms of storage, I don't think orientation would help a great deal.. The key thing is not to have air in there as that really messes things up.

I'm not wanting to postulate too much more as regards the specific Magenta issue. For now I'm working to reduce the variables and quirks.

...

But... on the whole sponge staining side of things, that happens when the OEM ink is allowed to dry out on the sponge without the protective cap/clip being applied. Once it dries it's a cast iron [cover the kids ears] to clear out... I have two more options to work with so not completely run out of ideas yet.

Not seen any staining from mixing OEM and refillable ink though... If there is a reaction taking place then it's likely to be in the internal mesh and not the sponge. We did find when cleaning that actually the mesh can be clean, even when the sponge is heavily impregnated with dried pigment so it's important not to assume dirty sponge = gummed up outlet and vice versa...

...

And sorry, @stratman, your affection is appreciated but, I'm sorry, these long distance relationships never work... Please accept I've moved on and married... ;)

When reading between the lines both @mikling and @websnail warn PGI-72 carts are not the same as PGI-9.
Canon had to do something to make refilling more difficult ;).
I was wondering about this statement as I was pretty sure that I'd found that there was no discernible difference between the PGI-9 and PGI-72 cartridges.

With that in mind I did some disassembly today and can't find any difference between the two cartridges with the obvious exception of the chips and the side "window" panels which Canon changed but this is purely cosmetic.

Worth noting that there are a few so called "compatible" carts of the sponge in a box design so if those awful things provide some sense of flow (albeit badly) I genuinely can't see any reason not to use re-chipped PGI-9 carts with the Pro-10 at all...

Maybe not related to this case, but I had also clog problems with magenta in my Pro10s. That was after starting to refill OEM carts with Octoinkjet. The problem disappeared for a while cleaning the printhead out of the printer but it reappeared in a few days, although to a lesser degree. Switching back to OEM ink and, later, to Precision colors PGI-72 magenta fixed totally the issue. I reckon it was an occasional batch of faulty ink because all the olther Octoinkjet inks never gave me the slightest trouble.

Are PC inks better in print quality last edition than Octoinks for pro 10s?

@websnail's dissection of the carts confirms they are the same (and that we don't have to believe something before checking).
Recycling PGI-9's will be handy for further ink experiments ;).

I could not solve the magenta problem with flushed carts (PGI-9 or PGI-72) and refilled a fresh cart with OEM (from a PGI-29).
Problem disappeared at once without any cleaning.
This would IMO not be the case if the reason was a clogging in the printhead.

After about 250 A4 photos the nozzle checks of the 8 other Octoinkjet colours (+ PC CO) are still perfect.

Based on the "pigment overloading" theory I payed most attention to the Red.
I could only once observe a tiny beginning of the wiping pattern but could not reproduce it.
Should print @The Hat cartridge stress test maybe.

I stopped fiddling with inks and carts (I refill the same set, this also removes remaining OEM faster) to obtain a stable environment.
