Pro-100, want to use 3rd party inks, what's next?

Well, Good afternoon one and All

Today is a special day here in Toronto where I live.

Our hockey team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, are playing the Bad Boston Bruins at 3:00 pm this afternoon in what could be the last game in this series as Toronto is leading the series 3 to 2 with this big game starting in 1.5 hours. I am so nervous I probably will not watch! Anyone from either Toronto or Boston on-line now on PK?

Anyway, I am a new member, just joined a few days ago, the first time I figured out how to post my question, so here goes.

I am, and have been an Epson user for many years, and a few photo printers ago.

First, the Stylus Pro 4800

next, the 4880

and now the 4900.

I have enjoyed the results BUT, and that is now a BIG "BUT", my printer gets clogged so often I have finally decided to switch to Canon, and purchased a Pro-100 this past Wednesday, and will pick it up this coming week and set it up in my home.

I am retired, but work at a children's residential country camp as their photographer, took over 50,000 pictures last summer, and am looking forward to going back this summer.
Along with posting 100s of pictures daily of children playing in the sun, and some rain, I also love to print some pictures a few times per week and post them so the kids can see what their parents are seeing daily, and they can bring to their cabins where they will post them around their beds.

I have also entered a number of pics at local photo clubs and have won a few contests, so I wish to continue printing many pictures over the next few months, but really need some help from you to get me started using 3rd party inks, so I can continue to print pics, but save money as I do it!

I truly have no ideas what I need, how to get it, and what to order so I can pursue my passion, both for myself, and the kids at camp.
I read that Precision Colors is the place to buy my inks, but what next?????

Should I use the ink that comes with the printer or wait until I purchase my 3rd party inks and start using them right from the start?

1. Use ONLY OEM (Canon) CLI-42 carts for refilling. CLI-8 carts can be used (they are physically identical), but you will have to swap the CLI-42 chip(s) onto the CLI-8 cart(s)
2. You will require a chip resetter.
3. DO NOT REFILL the OEM yellow cart without cleaning it out VERY THOROUGHLY, or purchase a replacement cleaned cart from Precision Colors (PC).
4. Get a second set of Canon Carts for refilling (buy used empty on eBay or through PC). The same caution applies to the CLI-42 yellow cart.
5. Use the carts that come with the printer first.
6. When one cart becomes low, SWITCH OUT ALL CARTS WITH YOUR PURCHASED SECOND SET, REFILLED, RESET, AND READY WITH PC INK.
7. Prep the original carts for refilling. Top off with PC inks, whether they are empty or not.
8. You now have two sets of carts. One set in the printer, the other refilled, reset, and ready when any cart in the printer becomes low.
9. Enjoy Printing!

Using the Pro 100 with refilled carts couldn’t be easier.

First start by buying a second set of CLl-42 carts and print till all of the carts get the low ink warning, at that point exchange them to the second set you have in reserve.

The one exception is the yellow cart, run that till empty and then exchange that with the second yellow cart, when empty either discard or purge the yellow cart thoroughly with Windex then water, or use a replacement yellow cart that you can purchase from Percisioncolors.

When starting out to refill it still costs a bit of cash initially, but once you have purchased a bottle set of replacement inks from Percisioncolors, you’ll be cost free for quite some considerable time and you can then print like crazy.

All the tips and instructions you’ll need to refill successfully are on the Percisioncolors website, and you’ll soon become a refill expert, but one Caveat, don’t try any of your own shortcuts, just stick to the procedure as its shown, and always practice patients..

As the others have stated Precision Colors, precisioncolors.com is the overwhelming favorite of Pro100 users here and on uglyhedgehog.com (a great photography forum site). The owner is also a major contributor on this site and is located in the Toronto area.

Just because you’re in the US, you shouldn’t assume we all here use the same ink supplier... There are many other good ink suppliers in the rest of this big world...
