Yes a special service tool software is needed. This post has download links for the service tool, and this post has some instruction for use. But you can only use the service tool if the printer is able to enter service mode. But service mode operations might be impossible, as this thread by @The Hat has not got any answers yet.

i have a feeling when there is enough of these printers needing new pads, someone will either write a hack and produce the pads. Right now i have three spares in my closet
