I have only just bought one of these printers second hand. I (foolishly perhaps) bought pattern cartridges from a German company. The first cartridges needed changing straight away and I had no problems but then last week I needed to change two more. Ever since then I've had the B500 error (which I read on another post here as being ink pressure - which makes sense as it happens when it's pressurising the ink). I can't open the doors though to put the old cartridges back in and see if I still have the same problem as it just sits there with the error. I rang Canon and they couldn't tell me any way of opening the doors either! I can't believe the design of this printer - especially at the price!
So does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do? Could it be one of the cartridges or is that just coincidence that I changed them at that time? I'm absolutely gutted that I've only printerd two things since I bought it and had to buy a full set of cartridges before I could do anything as well.
I'm not averse to stripping it down as I would rate myself pretty technically competent but I'm worried about The Hat's comment that 'that’s the real expensive one to repair'!
Many thanks, Duncan

Hi Duncan and welcome,

All dough this error does referrer to ink pressure problems, but that’s just a red herring to get you to send the printer back to Canon. Ouch.

What’s more likely happened is you’ve accidently put a cart back into the wrong position, (Just a guess) this can easily happen with compatible carts but not while using OEM’s, hence the cryptic answer from Canon, they knew exactly what you’ve done.

Have a look at this post it will tell you how to retrieve the rouge cartridge and get your printer back working again quickly..

Wow thank you so much - I'll try that tonight! Just to be able to open the doors will be a bonus. I hope I have made the rookie error you're guessing at(!) At least it would be an easy fix. What kind of design is this printer? I've never known anything like it.

What a brilliant forum. I was starting to think I'd bricked the printer (and even if this doesn't fix it I'm convinced it's the cartridges that are at fault so I've an opportunity to repair which I would definitely not have done otherwise).

Many many thanks, Duncan

Finally got round to trying that method out - replaced the cartridges with the old Canon ones and no error! I got my printer back. So relieved. Managed to narrow it down to one cartridge in particular so hoping the company will replace it as it is faulty. Have ordered another in the mean time so I can do some printing!
Many thanks again - you've saved me having to buy another printer (for now anyway(!))
