Here are a few of the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pa - a rail line used to climb the eastern side of the Allegheny Mountains.
The first is a 360 degree pano showing how the rails curve almost completely back on themselves - the building on the ends is the same building. The second is a map showing the rail line and the third shows the 3 lakes in the cradle of the curve and gives an idea of the elevation change.
