I work at a restaurant. We just started online ordering. We have a online printer here in the store that is in our kitchen. It is hard to know when the printer actually prints unless we are always looking at it. The printer is hooked up through our computer by ethernet. An order is placed online, and then this goes through our computer, then to the printer. The computer is also used to play music in our store, so we have lobby speakers. I would like some how a noise to be played that would be recognized by us, through the computer, which then plays out of the lobby speakers. This will allow us to know when an order is placed. I would like to know if there is way I can create an application, or program, or if there is some sort of application or program out there which can help with this. Please let me know. Thanks

Best Regards,

If you are using a PC there are tones that will play when an email comes in. If the orders are sent by email you can set the sound to play when an email arrives.

If you are using windows xp, then within the control panel under sounds and devices , under the sounds tab, you can assign a particluar sound when print is complete.

The default windows does not have anything assigned to this but you can manually assign something of your choosing or choose from the installed choices.. Perhaps you may want to record something and use that. You should be able to control the relative loudness of this sound within the sound mixer panel in windows.

I haven't tried it but everything appears to be in place for you to carry this out.

Good luck.

in addition to mikling's posting, you should also get a second sound card and a a small speaker connected to this one. this sound card should be configured as your default and your media player should be configured to use the old sound card which is connected to the large speakers.

thus windows sounds will be audible from the small service speaker and music from the large ones.

(it is possible to use a single six channel sound card for the same job where the media player should be configured for the rear speakers jack but this is a bit complex. do you really like to know more about it?)

-- sorry I just re-read your posting and noticed that you actually wish to hear the sound at the main speakers. Mikling's post is sufficient.
