PeterBJ, I'm running the same versions of Firefox and IE that you are, Windows 7 64 bit, current in terms of updates, Service Packs etc. And I seem to remember other websites crashing a browser.

Unrelated to the PDF on Precisions site, I inadvertantly downloaded Chrome by not "unchecking" the download when doing a program upgrade. I was intending to delete it but tried it when the Forum site was having browser problems. I've now found that some sites that choke on IE8 under XP do just fine with Chrome, In addition, Chrome handles some sites better and faster. I still haven't made Chrome my default browser for a variety of reasons, but I do use it selectively when the need arises.

Bottom line - some web sites like one browser better than another.

Crashes are rather arbitrary and capricious, George. It could be any Web site or file that just happens to trigger the feature that causes a program to crash. If not that Web site, then some other. A file cannot crash. Your program is crashing. There could be something wrong with the file, but we KNOW there is something wrong with the program that is reading it.

My guess would be Internet Explorer or Adobe Reader, but I don't really know exactly what you are using. I suppose it could also be a "security program", which ironically would be its own security risk. I don't think we can give support for any of these programs on this Web site, but I don't know exactly where to send you, because I don't use either of those programs.

Given that we've noticed some interesting issues with Internet Explorer 11 (of which there are numerous complaints) on our server (various sites) I would hazard a guess that Adobe Acrobat Reader (AAR for speed) has a plugin that needs updating and/or fixing.

I know that AAR has a new update put out in the last 3 days so worth upgrading that to see if it solves the problem. If that doesn't work, try disabling the AAR add-on in Internet Explorer to force pdf's to load in AAR as a separate process outside of Internet Explorer.

Overall I'd agree with @ThrillaMozilla ... The odds of it being the site are slim to none. When in doubt blame big corporations ;)

Go to the web page that has the PDF file you want to see and right click on the PDF link and then save the PDF to your hard drive. Then use Windows Explorer, or whatever you use to look at files on your hard drive, and then open the file. This will bypass any browser incompatibilities.

If the PDF reader "plugin" is the problem, it's usually a simple matter NOT to open PDFs in the Web browser, but to open automatically with a PDF reader in a separate window. That is often a better policy. If there is a crash or other problem, at least it clearly identifies which program causes the problem. Again, I don't know how to do this for IE, because I haven't used that program for years.

If it comes to this, there are good alternatives, for example SumatraPDF or Foxit for PDFs and Firefox, Chrome (or Chromium), Safari, or Opera for Web sites.
