Precision Color Ink rubbing off! Need help urgently! :|

Hi all, sorry I haven't been around the forum for a long time! Basically I refill my Canon Pro 9500 Mk 2 with Precision Color inks. They've been very good so far, but I might have let a bottle sit for too long ~ about 1 year.

6 months ago I refilled the ink tanks, did quite a number of prints with no problems except the color is starting to go off the OEM and can't really be corrected with a DataColor SpyderPRINT very well.

Today I just printed some test sheets with the 9500 mk2 and the inks starts rubbing off the paper very easily. I first realized it when the stacked 4R sheets got minor scuffs from simple handling. I put my thumb to it and started rubbing and I can see the white of the paper. I'm using Canon SG201 semi-gloss paper.

Is it time I change back to OEM inks until get a fresh bottle from Precision Colors? If I go back to OEM is there any procedures to flush the printer to prevent mixing?

How long should I wait before the ink no longer rubs off?

I have never experience that with any of my inks/printer and some of my ink stock is over twelve months old.

If your colours are going off it’s more lightly to be a feed problem (Ink starvation) than an ink colour shift, check your cartridges.

Take out all of your cartridges and give them a good shake (Re-insert) before running a head clean follow by a nozzle print and see what that tells you first.

Let’s hope you haven’t damaged your print head by doing test sheets because six months is a very long time to wait after a refill, you can change back easily to using OEM inks by just inserting the new cartridge and running a nozzle check.

The only time I’ve ever had a problem with the ink rubbing off a sheet is when I put the darn thing in the wrong way up, I also use I.S. inks..

I shall check it out. Maybe its just that the ink hasn't dried yet (I hope!) I think I'd change to OEM for now, a large quantity print job coming.
Probably time to refresh my carts anyway, they're the carts that came with the printer.

I was hoping to change to the Epson R3000 if it doesn't fix itself hehehe

Hi all!

Sorry for the trouble, I was being paranoid. The ink just didnt have time to dry, I guess I should let it dry on the printer for an hour before touching them

I just checked the price for OEM in local stores. 250SGD for a set of 10 inks approx 200USD. Holy shit. I think I'll just clean out the ink tanks really well and get fresh inks in case I contaminated my bottle. The ink colours are still a little wonky.

Any recommendations on how to flush it? Should I just wash it with distilled bottled water?

You still have not posted a nozzle check of your printout; it would help to see exactly what’s going on inside the printer with your colours.

If you wish to flush out the old ink from your cartridges then use this refiller clip attached to a 60 ml syringe and just suck the ink out.

Or you can make one of your own if you have a mind too. Pic:-

Use distilled or mains water if it’s not too hard, just put 30 ml of water in the syringe and inject it into the cart till full and then suck it out again a couple of times, don’t force the water in or you’ll burst the sides of the cartridge and you’ll have to stick it back together again. (Full cart = 15 ml.)

Empty out the water and fill the syringe half full of air and inject just air this time into the cartridge and then out a couple of times while holding the syringe on bottom and (Cart to the top) that will remove nearly all of the water, then you can refill the cartridge with ink once more.

Don’t forget to reset the chip before refilling..

about the ink not drying completely - I don't know about your printer, but I've had printers that have a setting that slows down the printing of the next page to compensate for slower drying ink. Of course, it won't help if it takes an hour for prints to dry enough to avoid ink from rubbing off. Also, some ink/paper combinations can be better than others to prevent the problem you are having. You might try different inkjet papers to see if it makes a difference.

I also had the problem of ink rubbing off when using IS ink with some Kodak glossy inkjet paper I found on sale. I even contacted the Kodak tech rep who told me to use some different settings and it would work just fine. Still had bronzing in dark areas where the ink appeared to be sitting on top of the paper and not drying. No problem with Canon or Epson glossy paper.
