Hello.

With the great help of this forum I am now refilling my Canon PIXMA MP 640.

The results are great and the cost of printing is now at a sensible level. In order to ensure many more years of easy refilling I would like to buy a couple of spare printheads. I already have a spare MP640 in the basement :D

Are there any other (and cheaper) Canon printers that use the same printhead and ink cartridges?

The way I find the answer to your question is to go to eBay and search for "print head MP640". There I find several auctions that reveal the print head works in these printers:

iP4600
iP4700
MP630
MP640

You will note the picture on the link indicates that the featured print head is for the iP3600, MP540, and MP620. Canon's USA website states that the iP3600 and MP620 print heads have 2368 nozzles whereas it states that the iP4600, iP4700, and MP460 have 4416 nozzles. The other printers apparently aren't available in the USA so I cannot tell how many nozzles they have. Clearly, the website is in error.

Thanks guys.

Out of the printers you mention the ip4600 seems like the cheapest option.

How can I be absolutely sure that it uses the same printhead as the MP640?

Would obviously be even better if the ip3600 used the same head as officestoredepot says, but the image indicates otherwise.

My understanding of it all is that ghwellsjr :) is perfectly right with the four models hed picked.
They all have the same print head in tread #2 above.. ;)

Thanks a lot folks.

Interesting to note that 5he price of the printer is less than the cost of the ink and printhead it comes with!

Guess it is all about giving people the first shot free and getting them addicted on overpriced ink.

That's why I always buy two or more identical new printers whenever I decide on a printer to own, just to have spares. However, I usually wait until the model is discontinued and the price comes way down. When I burned out my MP760 by trying to unclog some nozzles on a print head outside the printer and then putting it back in the printer, I immediately got my spare out of the box and was up and running in no time. There's nothing worse than not having a printer while you are trying to decide how or if to repair a damaged one or whether to go with a new model printer. Those decisions take a long time. And, since I was down to one MP760 with no spares, I kept my eyes open for cheap used ones in good condition and now I have two spares.

Also, the for the "iP" series Canon printers, the first digit after the "iP" tells you how many dye ink cartridges it has, so an iP4600 could never use the same print head as the iP3600.
