Photobook printing-absolute beginner

Hi, everyone!
I've just bought a Canon pixma pro 100s and am looking for help in choosing the best papers to print some photobook dummies.
I'd prefer to use matte paper and add varnish, but I'm absolutely clueless as to what I can and cannot do.

Hello man, it's an interesting topic however this is the member introduction forum, maybe you can ask a moderator to move the topic in the right section.

What you want to know specifically ? I assume the paper, ink and all other things depends also on your budget. There are papers that are wonderful but costs a ton, while others are a bit cheaper but still usable.

Also the use of varnish seems interesting but mainly I've heard of it for protecting single prints to be hanged on a wall. There are varnish suitable to be used in photobooks too?

I used Hahnemuhle Book and Album for my hand bound photobook and the results are phenomenal. It's short grained the pages are soft and turn smoothly like a high end photobook published by nazraeli press.

You should definately use a varnish like hahnemuhle protective spray to set the inks, this will prevent them from marking the facing pages. It's invisible and has no effect on the handling of the book. But do it before assembly.

Why the need for varnish.. Are you not using OEM inks..?

I printed with Piezography inks but I would still use the varnish with OEM. The paper is a very smooth rag so some ink stays on the paper surface. When you glue the cover the book needs to be put in a press which puts a lot of pressure on the pages. Opening and flipping through pages also has a rubbing effect. I only used one coat of varnish and it gets fully absorbed and is invisible.
