and apparently some kind of gloss optimizer improving the blacks as claimed.

And the printers now come with dedicated nozzle rows for the matte and glossy black inks - wow.

The ink configuration is strikingly similar to Canon's ipf5000: 12 ink rows including red (orange) and blue (violet) and green.

Actually Canon's red ink is orange in tone (i9950 and Pro 9000). And Epson's R800/R1800 blue ink is violet in tone. Now Epson call them orange and violet and Canon red and blue, but are in fact the same colours. Have a look at the nozzle check of the Canon ipf5000: the red and blue nozzle lines are orange and violet.

Canon is updating their printer family - new models are the Pro 4100 and 6100 models with 12 inks as before , and with 'S' models with 8 inks - without Chroma optimizer on these models

Epson is upgrading to 12 inks - Canon is downgrading to 8 inks - you have an even broader choice .

It could be clarified via the German Druckerchannel forum via Epson what this actually means, the overcoat is not something like the pigment encapsulation or the use of the Gloss optimizer but an overprint of the glossy black with the LLK ink creating the effects as claimed. This means as well that these printers don't need a separate cartridge for this overcoat and not a dedicated nozzle row either.

Canon has had these 8 channel printers available to select customers for a while actually. Initially they were sold to corporate accounts or where a rep was involved.They are specifically targeted to print and sign shops like Staples, etc. whose printing needs do not require the gamut their 12 channel models provide. State of the art they are not but reengineered to suit certain user needs. Same inks as their 12 channel models less 4 channels.

Wow - how does it work - is it 2 x 2D printers printing from both sides of the paper at the same time ?

I'm still trying to figure that out. It tells the fourth dimension is "time". But so far I can not print that out. The Hat has tought me what the third dimension is though with his plastic lamp.

Out hunting food for the P800 Early morning. Motor home loaded with lenses food and a couple of beer - the dog loves it. Printing is a hard life. Here "Bergkvara Sweden". I'll do anything for my Epson.

Sorry for my ranting.

I find the obove interesting.

However how far behind am I with my old 3880/P800 Epson HD ink technic (OEM) compared to these new 12 (or more) color printers on hight quality papers. Are they much better with a color gammut that hugely exceeds that old technic.

Is it time to save mony for a modern printer? How would one express the advantages to buy the new ones....? I do understand that a 8 cylinder car is superior to a 4 cylinder one but wonder how 12 cylinder acts compared. And here I'm not interested how it prints on super duper glossy paper.
