hi guys,

would appreciate any pointers as to what printer is easiest to use for scanning to email - it needs to have LAN and be 4-in-1, as well as have ADF. my main focus is on scanning, in particular scan-to-email, preferrably as PDF.

it doesn't need to be one-touch (though should be ideally as my parents will be using it), but something that doesn't ask you for twenty options before you're able to send that one PDF. the main use will be scanning a doc as a PDF, mainly to one email address (so quite repetitive).

oh, and also not HP preferrably, the software is bloated to the max. i know the lexmark prestige series is new and with touch-screen etc, but have heard some crappy reviews.

any hints appreciated.

Are you not concerned about the cost of replacing the cartridges? In other words, are your parents mainly going to using the scanner to send emails without printing much? Are they going to be writing their emails with paper and pen and scanning them to send them out? Are they also scanning photos or other things? Are your parents not computer savy? Do they need to print the emails they get or do they just read them on the screen?

In the USA, you can get a device called an email appliance that allows people who don't know how to run a computer to send and receive emails but they are rather limited.

Another option is to have your parents send their email by faxing them. This is about the simplest way to communicate hard copy from one place to another but it usually goes over a phone line instead of ethernet although with more complication, you can do it over ethernet.

I haven't pointed you to specific printers yet because I want to understand more what he real issues are.

thanks for the reply!

cost of replacing isn't that important, as there isn't that much printing going on.

re emails, they do them the normal way, it's just a question of being able to scan in various documents and attach them to the emails as PDFs - and as mentioned before, best would be an email with the attachment already there, which then could be forwarded.

photos not that important to scan, also print quality doesn't need to be that high.

hope that clarifies, do let me know whether you need any more clarification.

in essence what i need is a machine that i can scan to email from, with as little button pressing as possible (maybe also via customization, eg having a specified button that always scans to an email address - my HP sort of did that before it died, but the attachment was actually somewhere online and just a link to it came through).

I am not sure something exist with inkjets. Most scan-to-email systems are laserjet based.
